The Girringun Region Indigenous Protected Areas (the Girringun IPA) was declared in 2013 and is Australia's largest marine and terrestrial co-management IPA. The Girringun IPA extends over diverse tenures including Aboriginal-held lands, freehold lands, conservation parks, national parks, marine parks, and reserve lands. Girringun IPA co-management partnerships involve Girringun member group Elders and Traditional Owners, their RNTBCs/PBCs and Traditional Owner land-holding bodies, Australian and Queensland government agencies, World Heritage management agencies, local government, regional natural resource management (NRM) organisations and the conservation sector.

The Girringun Region IPA Coordinator will be primarily responsible for managing Girringun’s obligations relating to the coordinated implementation, progression, administration and periodic review of collaborative management arrangements agreed under the Girringun Region Indigenous Protected Areas. This position will work closely with all staff engaged through our regional Land and Sea program.

Objectives of the position

  • Working as a team member of Girringun’s regional Land & Sea program;
  • Coordinating regional-scale, collaborative management arrangements;
  • Overseeing the making, monitoring and review of all related (non-legal) agreements;
  • Coordinating IPA team secretariat services to the Girringun IPA Steering Committee;
  • Regularly liaising with all IPA partners including statutory managers / agencies;
  • Initiating and conducting regular community / stakeholder liaison and networking;
  • Producing accurate and timely community and agency IPA communications materials;
  • Undertaking general administrative duties and maintaining accurate files;
  • Timely management and meeting of all project reporting requirements; and
  • Assisting in integrated and efficient delivery of Girringun land and sea management services.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Please note that it is essential your application addresses each of the selection criteria by providing information about your qualifications, experience and skills as they relate to each of the criteria given.

Essential:

  1. Excellent understanding of Aboriginal cultural issues in northern Australia and the traditional connections Traditional Owners have with their country;
  2. Excellent facilitation skills and interpersonal skills;
  3. Excellent communication, negotiation and community consultation skills;
  4. Demonstrated secretariat (or similar) skills and experience;
  5. Demonstrated experience in land and sea management and/or community environmental and/or cultural resource management services delivery;
  6. Demonstrated background in a key skill area relevant to the position, including but not limited to: community development; community-based planning; Cybertracker / GIS / GPS / mapping; land and sea management; northern Australia flora or fauna; traditional knowledge recording / storage;
  7. Ability to work, positively and under your own initiative, with a wide range of people from different backgrounds, agencies and interest groups;
  8. Ability to travel independently and reliably between home and work;
  9. Ability to obtain a Queensland Blue Card; and
  10. Current Open Manual Drivers licence.
