Salary etc:

$97,182 - $110,708 p.a. (Professional Officer Class 2).

Details:

These are exciting opportunities for two Conservation Ecologists with strong adaptive management science and quantitative skills to join a passionate team responsible for building resilience in the landscape and achieving long-term nature conservation outcomes in the ACT.

The Office of Nature Conservation (ONC) brings together policy, science, and data expertise to accelerate unified thinking and action to respond to the immense conservation challenges facing the ACT.

The ONC focuses on an outcomes-based philosophy to guide and inform on-ground conservation efforts undertaken by ACT Parks and Conservation Services, volunteer environmental partners and the community.

Through collaboration and engagement with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, some of the ONC’s responsibilities include:

Delivering research, monitoring and evaluation programs focused on ACT biodiversity, threats and management interventions, providing expert advice on a range of ACT Government approval, licensing, operational and planning processes, and advising on and implementing threatened species and ecological community recovery plans.

Both Ecologist positions are within the Adaptive Management Support Team (AMS) for the ONC.

This team has a cross-thematic role in contributing scientific expertise, monitoring rigour, and quantitative evaluations to help facilitate the practice of adaptive management across the ACT.

All ecologists within the AMS team have a broad range of skills and experiences in designing, undertaking, analysing and communicating research with a strong focus on management effectiveness both within and beyond the ACT.

The AMS team primarily focusses on knowledge-synthesis and data-analysis, playing a significant quantitative role in using and interpreting ecological data for monitoring and evaluation purposes in the ONC.

The key responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Using ecological data to address questions of management significance, assess ecological condition, and evaluate outcomes against key objectives.
  • Contributing to the planning, designing and implementing ecological research and monitoring programs, including experimental design, data collection, spatialisation, review and analysis.
  • Ensuring projects are developed in collaboration with the community and end-users, and are well-coordinated with other government teams working in related areas.
  • Assisting in the provision of technical information and advice on the protection and appropriate management of resilient ecosystems to a range of government and non-government stakeholders.

We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where people with diverse thoughts, lived experience, and perspectives can thrive and contribute their unique talents to the ACTPS and ACT community. We encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability, people with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, veterans, younger and older workers, and people with diverse genders, sexes and sexualities to apply.

Eligibility/Other requirements:

  • Positions require tertiary qualifications in ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, or similar fields.
  • A manual driver’s licence.
  • Willingness to work independently in the field.
  • A current first aid certificate.

Notes: This is a temporary position available immediately for a period of 12 months with the possibility of permanency. A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only. This position will be in a new workplace designed for activity-based working (ABW). Under ABW arrangements, officers do not have a designated workstation/desk. Opportunities for flexible working options include hybrid working (being a combination of working from home, designated office based and FlexiSpace working locations across the ACT), and flexible start and finish times.
