About the positions

We are looking to appoint two fixed term research only positions to contribute to our existing team in the Centre for Freshwater Ecosystems at La Trobe University, based in Albury-Wodonga.

While broad training in freshwater sciences is desirable, we are specifically seeking applicants with a background in quantitative ecology, with skills and experience in one or more of the following areas: river and wetland ecology, quantitative ecological modelling, spatial data processing and remote sensing Specific skills in population modelling are specifically sought for one of the two positions to contribute to an ARC Linkage project on fish metapopulation dynamics.

Other projects successful applicants may contribute to include, span wetland fish conservation, environmental flows research, habitat suitability modelling and eco-hydrological modelling. More generally, candidates who can demonstrate their ability to integrate different methods (e.g. empirical data collection with remote sensing and/or quantitative models) or ecological modelling experience, including the use of R for data wrangling, spatial data analysis, and data visualisation will be highly competitive.

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this position, you will have

  • Completion of a PhD or equivalent qualifications or research experience.
  • A record of publications, conference papers and/or reports, or professional or technical contributions or successful research proposal submission which provide evidence of strong research potential.
  • Sound analytical skills with an ability to communicate complex information clearly both orally and in writing.
  • High level organisational skills: the ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, initiate and follow-up actions, all with a high level of self-motivation and personal management.
  • Familiarity in the use of R (or other relevant language) for ecological modelling, including the use of spatial datasets.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively with staff, students, national and international collaborators and industry partners from a diverse range of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, or co-supervise, Honours, Masters and/or PhD students.
