About Landcare ACT

Landcare ACT is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting community groups and volunteers in conserving, enhancing, and sustainably managing our environment. We represent, support and promote the approximately 100 community groups and thousands of individuals, who help look after rural areas, urban  parklands, nature reserves and waterways of the ACT Region. We work collaboratively with local landholders, government agencies and other stakeholders to foster community-led environmental stewardship.

Position Overview

The Project Manager will oversee a $2.75 million project aimed at improving urban waterways, riparian habitats, and water quality within the ACT. This role involves planning, coordinating, and executing project activities in partnership with delivery partners (Southern ACT Catchment Group, Molonglo Conservation Group, Ginninderra Catchment Group and Buru Ngunawal Aboriginal Corporation) and funders (ACT Government and the Australian Government). The ideal candidate will have strong project management skills, experience in environmental conservation, and a passion for urban waterway and riparian habitat restoration.

This position is 20 hours/week (0.53FTE) for a 3 year term.

Key Responsibilities

Project Planning and Execution

  • Implement and periodically review the detailed project plan, including scope, timelines, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Coordinate and manage all aspects of the project, ensuring alignment with project goals and objectives.
  • Oversee the implementation of project activities by delivery partners, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and within budget.
  • Maintain project management software (Asana), and support other users to ensure project tracking is up-to-date

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, Landcare ACT members and delivery partners.
  • Coordinate stakeholder meetings, workshops, and consultations to ensure inclusive and collaborative project implementation.
  • Communicate project progress, outcomes, and impacts to stakeholders through regular updates and reports.

Financial Management

  • Manage the project budget of $2.75 million, ensuring efficient and effective use of resources.
  • Monitor project expenditures, prepare financial reports, and ensure compliance with funding requirements.
  • Identify and mitigate financial risks to ensure project sustainability.

Environmental Management

  • Work with delivery partners to ensure best practices in urban waterway restoration, riparian habitat enhancement, and water quality improvement.
  • Work with delivery partners to monitor and evaluate environmental outcomes, ensuring project activities achieve desired ecological benefits.
  • Work with delivery partners to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and standards.

Community Engagement

  • Develop and implement a community engagement strategy to involve local residents and stakeholders in the project.
  • Oversee communications and promotions about the project to raise awareness and support for urban waterway and riparian habitat improvement.
  • Foster a sense of community ownership and stewardship of urban waterways and riparian habitats, in partnership with delivery partners

Monitoring and Reporting

  • Develop and implement a monitoring and evaluation framework to track project progress and outcomes.
  • Prepare regular project reports for the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and funding bodies.
  • Identify and address any issues or challenges that arise during project implementation.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Proven experience in project management, preferably within the environmental or not for profit sector.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated financial management experience, including budgeting and financial reporting.
  • Knowledge of urban waterway, riparian habitat, and water quality management practices.
  • Interest in environmental conservation and community engagement.

Desirable

  • An understanding of the environmental, social and institutional context of community environmental management and/or Catchment Management in the ACT
  • Tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience in environmental management, project management or a related field.
  • Relevant experience working respectfully with Traditional Custodians.
