The role

Reporting to the Lands Manager, you will work closely with the Parks and Wildlife Service in the Donnelly and Blackwood District’s to enable the employment and development of Junior rangers.

You will participate in a range of activities and support rangers in their works pertaining to conservation and land management and cultural heritage protection on the Noongar Land Estate and the Conservation Estate including cultural site assessments and monitoring, fauna and flora protection and monitoring, feral animal and weed control, construction and maintenance of infrastructure, support of tourism and recreational activities and the operation of associated machinery. 

In addition, you will work with the DBCA Blackwood and Donnelly Districts to facilitate rosters and work programs to enable the inclusion of KKAC rangers in District work programs across the associated outputs and facilitate the training of rangers in Certificate II and III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management at Southwest Regional TAFE. 

You will also work closely with Non-Government Organisations to ensure KKAC rangers are involved in a range of service provider activities in relation to the NRM and University sector and facilitate field trips accordingly.

Monitor operation budgets and ensures that OSH principles and practices are enshrined in the workplace at all times.

Location: Based in Busselton, with regular travel throughout the Karri Karrak region. 

Hours: Full-time – fixed term (2 years). 

About us

The Karri Karrak Aboriginal Corporation is the regional corporation for the South West Boojarah region. This region refers to the Wardandi and Bibbulmun/Piblemen Noongar language or dialectical groups. It encompasses towns including Busselton, Capel, Margaret River, Witchcliffe, Augusta, Windy Harbour, Northcliffe, Pemberton, Manjimup, Bridgetown and Nannup. The approximate size of the South West Boojarah region is 10,085 sq kms.

There are a number of significant sites in the South West Boojarah region. These include caves, some of which are the homes of mythological beings, ceremonial sites, rock art, paintings and artefacts. Cultural sites of significance also include the Nannup Caves, Jewel Cave, Devil’s Lair and a Birthing Lake.

You will: 

  1. Develop and maintain working rosters with DBCA Blackwood and Donnelly Districts output coordinators, to ensure the work programs for the rangers are fit for purpose and providing good exposure across the outputs. 
  2. Work with the Conservation and Ecosystem Management Division to ensure that KKAC rangers are participating in flora and fauna monitoring activities that will align to their TAFE studies. 
  3. Work closely with the Lands Manager to ensure the rangers are involved in fee for service opportunities associated with the Non-Government Organisation (NGO) Sector.
  4. Monitor expenditure associated with the programs budget and associated spreadsheets. 
  5. Participate in the development and implementation of cultural heritage plans as required, and ensure rangers are exposed to cultural heritage protection and management and interaction with Elders on country. 
  6. Ensure rangers meet their commitments with reference to training at SW Regional TAFE and assist in the logistics associated with these activities.
  7. Ensure rangers are available to participate in DBCA training as prescribed and facilitates travel logistics and integrated support accordingly.
  8. As opportunities present in conjunction with appropriate training and exposure participate in DBCA prescribed burning operations commensurate with capability, capacity, training and level of experience. 
  9. Assist in the development and training of KKAC rangers in prescribed burning activities including Level 1 Firefighter training.
  10. Respond in a positive and appropriate manner to public enquiries and requests for information and assistance. 
  11. Coordinate and assist in the preparation and delivery of interpretative and educational material as part of community education programs. 
  12. Provide assistance as required with running community workshops, education programs or interpretive activities delivered as a component of project activities. 
  13. Arrange and participate in public involvement activities, including consultation and education relating to the KKAC Ranger program and other planning documents and strategies. 
  14. Engage with external stakeholders including government agencies, local government authorities and private landholders to support service coordination and integration efforts, fostering positive relationships within the community.
  15. Follow safety protocols and procedures and provides guidance for Aboriginal Rangers and other junior staff, ensuring a safe working environment for all.
  16. Uphold compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and quality standards, contributing to the preservation of a safe and ethical work environment, including responsibilities defined in the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984.
  17. Participate in safety initiatives including team meetings, Job Safety Analysis preparation, workplace inspection, hazard identification and control and accident investigations.
  18. Responsible for general administration, including ensuring records are maintained and reports are prepared in accordance with required standard, e.g. time sheets, vehicle log books, works diary and training portfolio. 

Selection Criteria:

  1. Experience in or commitment to leading, supervising and managing teams, empowering individuals to work with confidence both in teams and independently to carry out field - based activities.  
  2. Experience in or demonstrated commitment to and passion for Caring for Country, land management practices, conservation initiatives, or related fields.
  3. Competent, effective and respectful communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to engage respectfully and constructively with colleagues, stakeholders, and community members.
  4. Demonstrated competence in written communication and computer operation skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, database software and the capture of field data. 
  5. Demonstrated high level of commitment to learning and development, with a genuine interest in formally learning more about land management and conservation.
  6. Current WA Drivers Licence (C Class minimum).
