An exciting opportunity now exists for an Aquatic Scientist to join our Ecology and Biodiversity Management Team, located within our Brisbane office.

Position Overview:

As our Aquatic Scientist, you will report directly to the Ecology and Biodiversity Management Team Lead / Principal Scientist. In this role, you will be expected to provide scientific and technical support to Senior Staff; particularly I relation to preparing for, and undertaking ecological sampling, data collation and analysis and report preparation.

Main Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Support in the delivery of a wide range of environmental assessments (e.g., environmental impact assessments) on a range of projects in collaboration with other Hydrobiology specialists, specifically:
    • Coordinate the preparation of fieldwork programs (e.g. equipment packing/freighting and organising travel and accommodation).
    • Undertake a variety of aquatic ecosystem monitoring programs, including fish, invertebrates, diatoms, and zooplankton sampling, groundwater-dependent ecosystems and aquatic/riparian habitat assessment.
    • Undertake and collaborate with senior staff in the preparation of proposals, collation of data and statistical analysis, technical reporting, non-technical documents and coordinating inputs from colleagues.
    • Complete tasks on time, to expected quality and at the expected budget to ensure client requirements are met and operations are efficient.
  • Opportunities to provide field-based support to other Hydrobiology Teams; such as the Land and Water Management Team (LWM) and Environmental Risk Assessment Team (ERA) and laboratory assistance, as required.
  • Coordinate animal ethics and fisheries permit requirements (including data collation and notifying the Fisheries Department prior to fieldwork as appropriate).
  • Undertake routine administration duties (including timesheet entry, logging of project-related expenses, attendance of weekly office meetings, etc).
  • Commitment to Hydrobiology HSEQ Integrated Management System, including Company policies, procedures and safe work practices.
  • Maintain status and contribute to a professional society.
  • Undertake other tasks as required by the role.

Essential Skills Required:

  • A technical background in Aquatic Ecology (ideally with Honours and/or Master's qualifications) and demonstrated previous experience in monitoring freshwater ecosystems is highly desirable.
  • At least one year of professional experience, either within a research or consulting role.
  • Solid grounding in experimental design and ecological statistics.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to produce high-quality technical reports or publications that are clear and concise yet pitched at a non-expert audience.
  • A desire to support other technical staff and others across the company.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Be willing and able to travel for fieldwork, including possible extended-duration trips in rural and remote locations (e.g., SEQ, wider Qld, interstate, and international).
  • GIS experience (including Arc platforms and/or other platforms).
  • Driver’s License.

  • Developed field skills, particularly in the assessment of fish and macroinvertebrate population and community status, and water quality sampling.
