BirdLife Australia and Birds New Zealand are pleased to announce that the 12th Australasian Ornithological Conference (AOC) will be held in Brisbane (Meeanjin), Queensland, the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from Tuesday 28 – Thursday 30 November 2023. The AOC is the primary conference for BirdLife Australia and is the largest biennial gathering of enthusiastic amateur and professional ornithologists from the region.

The conference statement is tied to a media panel event featuring our very own Kate Millar, Sean Dooley and BirdLife Vice President Hugh Possingham, who will talk about the newly updated Threatened Bird Index and the need for stronger nature laws on Thursday at lunchtime. Please come along.

BirdLife Australia is very excited to be co-hosting AOC2023, where professional and amateur ornithologists gather together every two years and exchange knowledge about birds (ornithology) and how we are helping to fight extinctions. Not only will you be able to hear first-hand new and exciting research, but you will also be able to meet fellow bird lovers on guided walks and in other social events. Personally, I am very excited to be presenting a poster about the effects of two floods on the birds of Oxley Creek Common, my favourite birding location with over 220 listed species, and the site of one of the morning bird walks.

On behalf of Birds New Zealand, I welcome you all to participate in the 12th Australasian Ornithological Conference (AOC). It will be the first face- to- face meeting of Australasian ornithologists since we all caught up with each other in Darwin in 2019. Consequently, we will have a lot to talk about and discuss advances in our understanding of the birds of Australasia. I’m looking forward to catching up with colleagues and their work in the inland of Australia and on recent advances in understanding continental sized ornithology. As well, I’m hoping that we will be able to show the best of recent work on islands and the habitats of New Zealand. Yet again, I’m pleased to be working with colleagues from BirdLife Australia to build a conference programme which will be stimulating and inviting to you all.
