Short course: Natural Resources & Indigenous Livelihoods - 14-18 September, 2020

Casuarina Campus, Charles Darwin University, Darwin, NT

The short course, titled Natural Resources and Indigenous Livelihoods, explores the connections between natural resource-based enterprise development and local and Indigenous livelihoods, and features a 5-day intensive based in Darwin (14-18 September, 2020) and two days of field trips in the outer Darwin region or alternative location.

Theory is integrated with Australian and international examples with an emphasis on issues pertinent to desert and tropical Australia (including coastal environments). The course will link theory and applied topics, through a combination of lectures, discussions and field-based observation during the 5-day intensive.

The course and intensive cover five themes:

  1. Indigenous livelihoods and diversification -including plant and animal products, land and sea management and marine enterprises
  2. Sustainable harvests
  3. Economics theory, value-chains, and sustainable livelihood frameworks
  4. Governance, business models and policy issues,
  5. Communication and engagement strategies, processes and tools

Who should attend?

This course is targeted at practitioners working with local, Territory, state and national governments, NGOs and community groups in natural resource management or community development.

This unit is an accredited specialist elective of the Master of Environmental Management (MEM) and elective in the third year of the Bachelor of Environmental Science (BES) and Bachelor of Science (BSC). Cross institutional enrolments from other universities are very welcome.

Cost: External participants $990 for tuition and field trip costs. CDU MEM, BES and BSC students $150 for field trip costs  (+HECS).
