Position Purpose

The Base Senior Ranger (Mount Garnet) is responsible for leading and coordinating ranger operations at the Mount Garnet Ranger Base while actively working on Country.

The role provides on-ground leadership, supervision, and mentoring to Rangers, supports the delivery of land and sea Country management activities, and ensures that operations are safe, efficient, and aligned with Girringun priorities.

The position plays a key role in:

• Coordinating day-to-day ranger activities
• Supporting project delivery across the Girringun Region
• Working closely with Traditional Owners to ensure cultural values guide operations
• Contributing to emergency response, disaster resilience, and environmental management programs

Key Responsibilities

Base Leadership & Coordination

• Lead day-to-day operations at the Mount Garnet Ranger Base
• Coordinate ranger work plans, field activities, and operational priorities
• Supervise Rangers, Ranger Supervisors, casual staff, and project staff
• Ensure effective communication between base, Ranger Coordinator, and wider team

Senior Ranger Duties

• Undertake land management activities across the Girringun Region
• Participate in environmental programs (fire, weeds, pests, marine debris, monitoring)
• Conduct compliance, monitoring, and field patrol activities
• Operate vehicles, trailers, machinery, and equipment safely
• Support emergency response, disaster preparedness, and incident response activities

Workforce Supervision & Mentoring

• Provide leadership, mentoring and on-the-job training to Rangers and trainees
• Support development of new and emerging Rangers
• Promote a strong team culture and safe work practices
• Assist with performance feedback and staff development

Cultural Engagement & Traditional Owner Support

• Work closely with Traditional Owners and Elders to support on-Country activities
• Ensure cultural protocols and values are respected in all ranger operations
• Support integration of Traditional Ecological Knowledge into land management practices
• Participate in consultations and community engagement activities

Project Delivery & Logistics

• Support delivery of ranger projects across the inland areas of the Girringun Indigenous Protected Areas (IPA)
• Assist with planning, scheduling and coordination of field activities
• Manage logistics including vehicles, equipment, and supplies
• Support procurement and resource planning where required

Workplace Health & Safety

• Ensure all field activities comply with WHS policies and procedures
• Conduct pre-start checks and risk assessments
• Maintain safe working environments in remote and high-risk conditions
• Promote a strong safety culture within the team

Administration & Reporting

• Maintain records of field activities, patrols, and operations
• Prepare reports, incident reports, and operational updates
• Assist with project reporting and funding requirements
• Maintain equipment logs and maintenance records

Selection Criteria

Essential

• Demonstrated experience in Indigenous land and sea management
• Ability to lead, supervise and mentor ranger teams
• Experience working in remote and on-Country environments
• Strong understanding of Aboriginal cultural values and protocols
• Good organisational, communication and leadership skills
• Ability to manage field logistics and operations
• Current Queensland Driver License ( manual Preferred)
• Ability to undertake physically demanding outdoor work and pass a medical
• Blue Card (working with Children) or Must obtain one in 2 months

Desirable

• Certificate III or IV in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (or similar)
• Experience in fire management, biosecurity or environmental programs
• 4WD, Chainsaw, First Aid, or Fire qualifications
• Experience with GIS, GPS or environmental monitoring systems
• Experience supporting compliance or joint management activities
