Position Purpose

The Ranger is responsible for supporting the delivery of on-Country land and sea management activities at the Mount Garnet Ranger Base.

The role is primarily field-based and involves working as part of a team under the guidance of the Ranger Supervisor, while maintaining accountability to the Base Senior Ranger.

The position contributes to:

  • Environmental management and monitoring activities
  • Protection of cultural values and Country
  • Delivery of ranger programs and projects
  • Support for emergency response and disaster resilience activities

Key Responsibilities

Ranger Duties (On-Country Work)

  • Participate in land management activities
  • Assist with environmental programs (fire, weeds, pests, monitoring)
  • Undertake fieldwork including patrols, inspections and maintenance
  • Operate vehicles, equipment and tools safely in line with procedures

Field Team Participation

  • Work under direction of the Ranger Supervisor during daily operations
  • Follow assigned tasks and contribute to team outcomes
  • Support team members and maintain a positive work environment
  • Take part in training and skill development opportunities

Cultural Engagement

  • Work respectfully with Traditional Owners and Elders on Country
  • Follow cultural protocols in all activities
  • Support the protection of cultural heritage and significant sites
  • Assist with cultural activities and on-Country programs

Workplace Health & Safety

  • Follow all WHS policies and procedures
  • Participate in pre-starts, safety briefings and risk assessments
  • Use equipment safely and report hazards or incidents
  • Help maintain a safe working environment in remote settings

Equipment & Site Maintenance

  • Assist with care and maintenance of vehicles, equipment and tools
  • Support preparation for field trips and operational activities
  • Maintain cleanliness and order of base facilities and field gear

Administration & Records

  • Assist with recording daily activities and field data
  • Support completion of basic logs, timesheets and records
  • Provide updates to the Ranger Supervisor or Senior Ranger as required

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • Interest or experience in land and/or sea Country management
  • Ability to work in remote and on-Country environments and undertake physical outdoor work
  • Willingness to follow direction and work as part of a team
  • Understanding of or willingness to learn cultural protocols
  • Basic communication skills
  • Current QLD Driver License (manual preferred)
  • Blue Card (working with Children) or must obtain one in 2 months
  • Must pass a pre-work Medical

Desirable

  • Certificate I/II in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (or similar)
  • Experience in environmental or ranger programs
  • Relevant tickets (e.g. First Aid, 4WD)
  • Experience using basic tools, GPS or field equipment

Workplace Requirements

  • Ability to travel and stay overnight in remote locations
  • Ability to work flexible hours when required
  • Participation in fieldwork, camping and outdoor work
  • Ability to support emergency and operational activities
