About ReconEco:

ReconEco is a well-established ecological consultancy based in Lismore on the NSW far north coast that specialises in flora/fauna survey and assessment including the use of biodiversity detection dogs. The company runs a team of high-end detection dogs that undertake surveys for threatened fauna, feral animals, and invasive invertebrates. ReconEco is highly regarded in the detection dog industry and has been undertaking large scale detection dog based ecological surveys for over ten years.

As well as detection dogs, ReconEco undertakes general flora/fauna survey and assessment with a relatively small team of highly professional and experienced ecologists.  Additionally, the company has a  feral animal division that undertakes feral animal monitoring and control mainly associated with the protection of a variety of threatened species.  

The Role:

ReconEco is seeking to appoint a part-time dog handler/ecologist to form part of an expanding team and help deliver high quality field survey and assessments including mapping and reporting. The detection dog handler/ecologist role involves the following main duties:

  • Dog handling (field work and training).
  • Working in a team of dog handler/ecologists to deliver a variety of projects for mainly government agencies.
  • Assist in organising small and large-scale detection dog surveys including liaison with clients and stakeholders.
  • Collect, collate and analyse detection dog survey data, and prepare reports.
  • Undertake flora/fauna survey and assessment and/or feral animal monitoring and control in support of the greater ReconEco ecology team.

It is important for the successful candidate to be experienced, enthusiastic, self-motivated and able to work independently (we are a small company of field ecologists, and we aren’t always around) and as part of a team (sometimes we’re around!). Additionally, the successful candidate should be free to work occasional weekends , travel on short notice and be away from home for sometimes extended periods.

The position is part time three to four days a week equivalent depending on qualifications with potential for increase.

Selection Criteria:

To be a successful applicant you will need the following qualifications/attributes:

Essential:

  • Three years of experience in a similar role.
  • Recognised industry certification/experience in scent detection dog training/handling.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to produce clear and concise reports and correspondence.
  • GIS/mapping skills.
  • Ability to travel away from home to perform duties, sometimes for extended periods.
  • Willingness to work occasional weekends.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Current driver’s licence.
  • Current first aid certificate.

 Desirable:

  • Biosecurity dog handling experience.
  • 4wd experience/training.
