The Conservation Ecologist provides applied ecological support within Yorke and Mid North Region to assist wide ranging national parks and wildlife management functions, using professional expertise to shape practical management decisions and solutions. The role requires a sound and broad understanding of applied ecology in a conservation and park management context, having a particular focus in supporting the delivery of nature conservation, wildlife and fire management programs on public land. The Conservation Ecologist evaluates and advises on environmental risks and opportunities and is responsible for coordinating regional advice on a range of matters including planning and development, mining, and native vegetation clearance and management across parks and Crown lands within the region.  The Conservation Ecologist builds capacity in the region through knowledge transfer and takes a leading role to support project delivery. The role is required to work collaboratively with community leaders and key partners with environmental interests to ensure mutually beneficial parks and wildlife management outcomes.

Essential Criteria (including qualifications):

• A current class “C” driver’s licence.
• A university degree in ecology, environment, conservation biology or a related discipline.

Special Conditions:

• Will be required to participate in emergency preparedness, response and recovery activities required by government agencies.
• Participation in an “on-call” roster may be required.
• Will be required to undertake a medical and fitness assessment for a Fire Fighting Role Classification as defined in the DEW Fire Management Policy and Procedures.
• May be required to work alone in a field environment.
• May be required to work from any location within the region or any region or management unit within the state.
• You must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or provide evidence that you hold a valid working visa that allows you to work in Australia.
• Wearing a company uniform during working hours and/or when representing the department is mandatory.
• Will be required to undertake intra or interstate travel, including travel in light aircraft, involving occasional overnight absences, and work outside of the normal hours of work.
• You will be required to provide a valid Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check prior to being employed, which is required to be renewed every three years before expiry. DEW will cover the cost of renewal.
• A successful applicant who is not currently employed by the Department for Environment and Water will be required to have an original photo identification document sighted and provide a valid Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) issued within the last 12 months.

Remuneration: PO2 $91,565 min - $106,074 max p.a.
