Position/Role Objectives

Aboriginal Landcare Coordinators (ALC) are responsible for supporting, and will work collaboratively with, Regional and Local Landcare Coordinators and Landcare Groups to build cultural knowledge and awareness.

The ALC will assist Local Landcare Groups across the region to engage with Aboriginal Communities with the objective of establishing mutually beneficial and culturally responsive land management practices.

The ALC will support the creation of culturally responsive environments that embed Aboriginal practices at the centre of their program and service design.

ALCs will participate in cultural Community of Practice activities to grow their cultural and professional knowledge and share best practice ideas across the ALC network.

Key Deliverables

  • Community Network - identify and establish regional/local Aboriginal community networks.
  • Create links between Landcare activities/projects, Aboriginal communities and other stakeholders.
  • Foster collaborative participation to create mutually beneficial land management practices and projects.
  • Encourage and support opportunities for co-designed activities in relation to the above criteria.
  • Monitor, evaluate and report on activities and outcomes.
  • Provide cultural support and knowledge sharing to groups, networks, Landcarers and landholders to improve understanding of Aboriginal practices.
  • Participate in Aboriginal Community of Practice activities.
  • Work with the Regional Landcare Coordinator to support regional priorities including coordination of cultural training and events, production of a cultural guide booklet, and contribute to development of a Reconciliation Action Plan.
  • Regular communication including with Landcare groups, Aboriginal communities and volunteers.

Reporting/Supervision Arrangements

The ALC position reports to the Chief Executive Officer and is supported by the Murrumbidgee Landcare Inc. board and/or steering committee.

The successful applicant will be working in a broader Landcare network with support available. The Aboriginal Landcare Coordinator will work closely with the Murrumbidgee Landcare Inc. organisation, along with a broader network of Local Landcare Coordinators, Regional Landcare Coordinators and LLS staff across the Riverina and surrounding regions.

Aboriginal Landcare Coordinators will have access to an Aboriginal Landcare Community of Practice and support from Landcare NSW's Aboriginal Partnerships Managers.

Selection Criteria

Please address each of the following criteria:

  • Identify as Aboriginal and meet the requirements of identifying as Aboriginal:
    1. Be Aboriginal.
    2. Identify as Aboriginal, and.
    3. Be accepted in the community as Aboriginal.
  • Hold a strong understanding of Aboriginal Cultural Knowledge and practices, with an understanding of the local Aboriginal communities and their networks and a commitment to collaboration.
  • Be able to effectively build and maintain strong relationships with a broad range of people including Government agencies, community groups and volunteers.
  • Demonstrate strong time management and work efficiency skills with the ability to prioritise.
  • Have good organisational, administration, and computer skills.
  • Have experience in action planning, training delivery and group facilitation.
  • Have an understanding of, and commitment to, local environmental and agricultural land management issues.
  • Have an understanding of the role of Landcare, its activities and engagement with the Aboriginal community regarding land management practices in this setting.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to work with minimum supervision, be able to use initiative, and have the ability to work as part of a team or network.
  • Have the ability and willingness to work outside office hours from time to time, to contact landholders and attend community group meetings.
  • Have the ability to travel and work away from home / work at other locations for multiple days duration.
  • Hold a current NSW Driver's Licence.

  • This is an identified Aboriginal Position where evidence of Aboriginality is required. Applicants must be of Aboriginal descent. Exemption is claimed under Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.

  • Attendance at meetings outside of normal work hours may be required.
  • Travel around the Riverina region and infrequent travel and overnight stays may be required.
  • You may be required to use your own vehicle for work purposes and provide us with copies of current Comprehensive insurance policies for your vehicle.
  • Vehicle use will be reimbursed on a per kilometre basis with the shortest distance between destinations used to calculate reimbursement.
