With over 7.8 million trees planted and 35 projects across Australia, RA has demonstrated a significant and measurable impact on Country, community and climate.

RA is focused on developing new ecosystem restoration projects across two focus programs: 1) Regional Restoration and 2) Community Pocket Forests.

This is your chance to join a passionate team at the forefront of environmental restoration. You'll create measurable environmental and community impact through innovative Community Pocket Forest projects that cool neighborhoods, support native biodiversity, and improve community wellbeing.

About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Planting Manager to join our growing team. As our Community Pocket Forest Planting Manager, you will lead the on-ground creation of native, biodiverse community forests in Perth’s urban and peri-urban environments. You will work closely with diverse communities to transform underutilised urban spaces into thriving local ecosystems that enhance climate resilience. This is a part-time role with the prospect of full-time conversion.

Key Responsibilities:

Program delivery & Project Coordination

  • Work closely with the Program Lead to ensure seamless delivery of the Community Pocket Forests program, meeting operational objectives and achieving key program impacts on time and within budget.
  • Lead end-to-end delivery of community pocket forest projects, including site assessment, site preparation, soil remediation, planting, ongoing data collection and maintenance.
  • Coordinate all logistics for planting sites, including irrigation, sourcing soil amendment materials, tools, and managing stakeholder and contractor relationships across multiple concurrent projects.

Field Surveys & Assessments

  • Conduct site visits across the Perth and Peel region to support site selection, monitoring and ongoing maintenance.
  • Undertake reconnaissance flora surveys and soil testing to inform species selection and soil remediation strategies.
  • Develop landscape designs for planting sites, incorporating species selection, community access, aesthetic considerations, and adherence to local design policies to create functional and biodiverse urban forests.
  • Ensure strict adherence to Western Australian planting protocols while adapting techniques to meet site-specific conditions.
  • Undertake ongoing maintenance of established pocket forests, including watering, weeding, mulching and plant health checks, to ensure long-term establishment and survival.
  • Monitor and document forest health, growth and improvements in biodiversity over time, using data to demonstrate ecological impact.
  • Collect temperature and microclimate data at planting sites to measure localised heat mitigation impact of community pocket forests over time.

Community Engagement

  • Engage with diverse stakeholders, including Traditional Owners, local councils and community groups, to build support for projects and encourage active participation.
  • Lead engaging community planting days, creating meaningful experiences that inspire long-term environmental stewardship.
  • Support social impact data collection to measure and communicate the community outcomes of the program.

 Data & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date project databases, ensuring all ecological, temperature and social impact datasets are well organised and consistently recorded.
  • Prepare and deliver detailed environmental reports documenting project outcomes, lessons learned and ecological impacts.
  • Use GIS to create heat vulnerability maps to support site identification, stakeholder engagement and clear reporting.

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • Relevant TAFE certificate or diploma (or equivalent), with at least 2 years of experience in ecological restoration, urban forestry, horticulture, landscaping or a related field.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience conducting flora and vegetation surveys, and native plant identification.
  • Experience in planting techniques, soil remediation, and landscaping practices.
  • Current driver's license and willingness to travel across Perth and Peel regions, as well as some interstate travel.
  • Knowledge of urban greening protocols.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and undertake physically demanding tasks.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Key Skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication and collaboration skills, particularly in community or volunteer settings.
  • Organised, proactive approach with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent project management and multitasking abilities, with experience coordinating multiple concurrent projects.
