Would you like to join the team at the Derwent Estuary Program as our Estuary Scientist?

The DEP is a not-for-profit partnership between industry, state, and local government with the purpose of sharing science for the benefit of Timtumili Minanya/Derwent Estuary. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with multiple stakeholders, has experience and a passion for science including managing water quality monitoring programs and analysing large datasets to better understand environmental trends and conditions. Sharing the science is an important part of the DEP so an ability to communicate complex science to a range of audiences is another valuable attribute we seek. The role of Estuary Scientist is an ongoing and full-time position. The successful applicant will also be supported with professional development opportunities.

Key tasks:

Manage monitoring and scientific programs, including:

  • Ambient water quality
  • Seafood safety - metals in fish and shellfish
  • Habitats and species (including macrophytes and seagrass)
  • Manage/maintain database
  • Convene Monitoring Taskforce meetings
  • Prepare scientific and technical reports, including an Annual Technical Review
  • Other duties, as required

These activities to be undertaken in consultation with the CEO, other DEP staff and partners.

Selection criteria

  1. Relevant degree and training in science.
  2. Experience in the design and implementation of boat-based monitoring programs for water and biota.
  3. Strong skills and experience in statistical data management, analysis and interpretation.
  4. Experience in translating science for management including writing clear and succinct technical reports for diverse audiences.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders to achieve mutually beneficial objectives.
  6. Good organisational skills with the ability to work effectively individually, and in a team environment to coordinate and manage a variety of tasks.
  7. Current drivers license.

Desirable skills

  1. Coxswain and first aid qualifications.
