The Organisation
Mimal Land Management area sits at the geographic centre of Arnhem Land, about 250km east from Katherine. It covers an area that’s nearly as big as Kakadu National Park. The main communities and homelands in the area include Bulman, Weemol and Barrapunta (Emu Springs). About 300 people reside in Bulman and Weemol, which is located 312km northeast of Katherine on the Central Arnhem Highway.
Our country is made up of many different ecosystems that support a diverse array of plants and animals – from Ruwurrno & Rorrobo (Grassy plains) to Badno & Ngalwad (Rock country), Berrhno & Mininyburr (Woodland and Forest) and Djula & Wah (Freshwater country). Across the area are special places that have important meaning to our people, including rock art sites and spiritual places linked to our dreaming.
After a long journey Mimal gained independence and control over its land in 2017. Built on a vision of delivering benefits to country and culture for the Dalabon, Rembarrnga and Mayili landowners and people in south central Arnhem Land, we have steadily developed strong leadership in our board of directors and created a team of staff and consultants who share our vision.
Although our organisation is young, our indigenous Mimal Rangers have been carrying out land management responsibilities since the late 1990s.
The Opportunity
The Ranger Base Coordinator is a pivotal role responsible for the day-to-day leadership, coordination, and operational management of the Weemol Ranger Base.
Acting as a key communicator and facilitator, the Ranger Base Coordinator ensures that base functions, logistics, and remote work teams operate effectively to support Mimal’s programs. The role involves people management, incident response, convening meetings, communication between base and Darwin operations, and a strong cultural understanding of working on Country.
This position plays a critical role in and the success of rangers and staff. Leading outstation work, overseeing accommodation, facilities, workshop, building works and base administration. Central to the role is identifying systems gaps, updating processes and implementing solutions. It enables the Operations Manager to focus on activities such as Ranger Development and the implementation of the Healthy Country Plan.
The role’s location is Weemol Ranger Base and Mimal Land Management Area, with regular trips to Darwin.
