The Impact Assessment Unit in the State Planning Assessment and Facilitation division is responsible for administering Victoria's statutory environmental impact assessment (EIA) system for major projects, in particular the Environment Effects Act 1978 (EE Act) and Bilateral Agreement with the Commonwealth under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). This supports the Minister for Planning and government to make timely, informed assessments and decisions, and proponents to evaluate and refine their proposals efficiently in the context of effective EIA and stakeholder input. At a practical level, the unit manages processes ensuring integrated, robust assessment of impacts, works with agencies to elicit inputs, ensures a coordinated approach and provides governance for statutory compliance.

About the Role

This position is fixed term fulltime for 2 years. The Impact Assessor will work in an agile, multi-disciplinary team that provides advice and implements statutory requirements for environmental impact assessment of major projects under Victorian and Commonwealth legislation, including energy projects. The team delivers high quality and timely environmental impact assessments. The Impact Assessor will contribute technical expertise, authoritative advice, and sound project management of impact assessments and statutory processes.

Position Outcomes /Accountabilities

  • Collaborate and deliver on the project management of EIA to facilitate timely and robust assessments and statutory decision making for our EIA processes.
  • Contribute to efficient management of statutory processes on behalf of the Minister for Planning, including coordination with other statutory approvals/processes as required.
  • Effectively consult with and advise stakeholders, including internal, agency, proponent and community, in relation to processes under the EE Act and EPBC Act Bilateral Agreement.
  • Provide timely, authoritative written and verbal advice to departmental executives and the Minister for Planning on EIA processes, as well as specific procedures and requirements for our projects.

Mandatory

  • A relevant tertiary qualification and demonstrated technical expertise in environmental impact assessment or aligned environmental discipline is required.
  • Experience delivering environmental impact assessments and/or delivering statutory environmental approval processes for large and/or complex projects.
