ABOUT THE ROLE
The core element of this exciting position is to mentor and build the capacity of women rangers across the Kimberley. The ideal candidate will be passionate about empowering women through capacity building in Indigenous land and sea management and connecting people to one another. The position is based in Broome with regular travel across the Kimberley and potentially nationally (approximately 40% field time in remote locations).
This role focuses on delivering on-ground outcomes that align with the Kimberley Indigenous Women's Ranger Strategy (the Strategy). Developed by Kimberley women rangers, the Strategy's vision is: Kimberley Women Rangers are confident, respected and empowered. We learn from each other, inspiring current and future generations of women to be leaders.
The role will work with community, not for profit and government partners and industry to connect natural cultural resource management and Indigenous women's support services; and ensure a cohesive and shared approach to supporting women in ranger and leadership roles.
Locally and internally, the position will work closely with program managers, ranger coordinators, training and administrative staff to support KLC Women ranger teams: primarily Bardi Jawi, Nyul Nyul, Mayala, Gooniyandi, Paruku, Kija and Balanggarra and other emerging groups. The role will also have a focus on understanding the operational or cultural needs of women ranger groups on country and work to resolve these in a culturally responsive way supporting effective delivery or ranger work programs on a regular basis.
Nationally, the Coordinator will contribute to other relevant women's networks to share experiences, ideas and information, provide support and advice, and enable connections for women in remote and isolated communities.
The position is based in the Broome KC office and requires regular field trips and field support across the Kimberley.
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
The ideal person in this role will have strong networking, capacity building, communication and interpersonal skills. They will have a good understanding of the Kimberley landscape including knowledge of the issues faced by regional and remote communities as well as the service providers and organisations that support them.
You will be a passionate professional in Indigenous land and sea management or capacity building and training, have strong organisational and project management skills (including project monitoring and evaluation) and a willingness to spend time on Country supporting women ranger aspirations and needs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee and lead the on-ground delivery of the actions within the Kimberley Indigenous Women's Ranger Strategy 2024-2034 (KIWRS).
- Facilitate the regional KIWRS Working Group to support the on-ground delivery of the Strategy objectives, vision and actions across the region.
- Identify and support on-ground needs and aspirations of women rangers and women ranger projects and activities.
- Support the coordination & delivery of women rangers' training, projects and operational work plans, with established and emerging women ranger groups or individuals
- Support women rangers' professional development needs by coordinating additional training, exchanges, development or leadership opportunities e.g. conferences, workshops, placements and specialised role development for realistic career pathways
- Liaise with women rangers, coordinators and local service providers to facilitate access to appropriate resources and specialist support services to meet Kimberley women rangers' development needs
- Support the national women ranger network to encourage information sharing, joint projects and coordinated advocacy
- Support the provision of relief arrangements for Women Ranger Coordinator absences when required
- Promote gender equity and diversity and share best practice across the organisation and ranger groups nationally
- Complete presentations on women's activities
- Manage and report on training and operational budgets in close consultation with other Ranger Development staff and LSMU Program Managers
- Attend and support relevant national and regional networking events including developing agendas and workshops
- Attend regional staff meetings, and support women ranger involvement in KLC AGM and other events and meetings
- Comply with and assist remote based staff to understand and abide by KLC Policy and Procedures and the Employee Code of Conduct at all times.
- Undertake other reasonable duties as directed by LSMU Management.
- Demonstrate an awareness of and commitment to the KLC Vision and its Values.
- Participate in relevant training and professional development activities.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential
- Demonstrated experience in Indigenous land and sea management, with proven ability to manage and develop programs in partnership with Traditional Owners, focusing on sustainable land and sea management practices that align with Indigenous cultural values.
- Project Coordination and Management skills, including planning, budgeting, monitoring and reporting to deadlines.
- Understanding of Aboriginal cultures, protocols in relation to caring for Country, with a commitment to community empowerment, training and development.
- Experience in community engagement and empowerment, particularly in remote Aboriginal communities, with a sound understanding of cultural protocols and sensitivities.
- Event and training Coordination, including logistics, stakeholder engagement, and documentation for events, workshops, exchanges and training programs that support capacity building and professional development.
- Effective communication skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage across cultures and with a wide range of stakeholders including Indigenous communities, partners, and government agencies.
- Organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work flexibly in dynamic and remote environments.
- Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with a team-oriented, strengths-based approach to partnership and program delivery.
- Current C Class Driver's Licence (manual preferred) and willingness to travel regularly across the Kimberley, including overnight stays in remote areas and camping where required.
Desirable
- Relevant qualifications in Indigenous land and sea management, community development, education, natural resource management, or another related field.
- Experience with monitoring and evaluation frameworks, including qualitative data collection and reporting.
- Advancement of gender equality or supporting the empowerment of women, particularly in remote or cross-cultural contexts.
