Senior Environmental Officer

Join our Environment, Heritage and Resilience Department as a Senior Environmental Officer and play a critical role in enhancing environmental performance and ensuring regulatory compliance for sewage pump stations and associated networks.

About your new role

As a Senior Environmental Officer, you will be responsible for supporting operational teams in improving environmental performance and ensuring compliance with relevant environmental laws and regulations. You will manage environmental risks associated with sewage pump stations and the sewer network, ensuring that operations align with the City’s Environmental Authority conditions. This role requires strong leadership as you will oversee a small team of Environmental Officers, guiding them to deliver key environmental priorities.

You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies, to assess environmental risks, respond to incidents, implement effective mitigation strategies. Your expertise will be essential in developing detailed environmental reports that drive continuous improvement and inform decision-making. Additionally, you will support operational teams in incident response, ensuring timely regulatory notifications and adherence to compliance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert guidance to operational, planning, and construction teams to identify and mitigate environmental risks.
  • Lead environmental monitoring and reporting, including surface water, groundwater, and odour assessments.
  • Support environmental incident response and ensure compliance with statutory reporting requirements.
  • Maintain comprehensive environmental records, conducting regular reviews in line with Environmental Authority standards.
  • Engage with internal teams, statutory authorities, consultants, and business partners to ensure best environmental practices.
  • Supervise environmental consultancies conducting technical analysis and monitoring.
  • Participate in internal and external forums, working groups, and committees to advocate for environmental improvement.
  • Lead and collaborate with Environmental Officers to deliver on key work priorities.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated leadership experience (highly desirable).
  • Extensive knowledge of environmental legislation, including the Environmental Protection Act.
  • Experience in environmental compliance, auditing, and monitoring programs.

Skills & Capabilities

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), QLIMS, and database systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to produce high-quality reports.
  • Ability to manage stakeholder engagement, including regulatory bodies and internal teams.

Other Requirements

  • C Class Driver’s License.
  • Ability to work as part of an on-call roster when required.
