Employment Type: 4-5 days per week (0.8-1.0 FTE) Flexible work options considered.

Term: Fixed term - 3 years.

Hours: 35 hours per week FTE.

Salary: $76,000 - $81,000 p.a. pro-rata depending on prior experience, skills, qualifications and time in role + 12% superannuation.

Background

Jali Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) is the traditional country of the Nyangbul people of the Bundjalung Nation. Our office is based in Bullinah - the Nyangbul word for Ballina which means 'place of plenty'. Jali LALC has a total of 1894.55 hectares of land holdings, which makes it one of the largest land holders in the local area. Our boundary covers the local government areas of Ballina and parts of the Byron and Richmon Valley.

The Opportunity

Jali LALC currently has an awesome opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic individual who wishes to be part of a deadly team of rangers, working collaboratively to undertake traditional and contemporary land and sea country management.

This position will play a leading role in caring for the Nguyna Jargoon IPA, along with assisting with field operations, cultural site assessments and mentoring (Grade 1-2) rangers throughout Nyangbul land and sea country.

This includes:

  • Undertaking, participating in and maintaining cultural practices including cultural burning, cultural heritage management, learning language and storytelling.
  • Undertaking 4WD and vessel patrols of Nyangbul land and sea country, with a primary focus on the Ngunya Jargoon IPA.
  • Undertaking bush regeneration and revegetation activities, wildlife research and monitoring, sea grass surveys and water quality/eDNA analysis.
  • Undertaking wildlife rescue and response activities.
  • Responding to emergencies (fire, flood and oil spills).
  • Undertaking pest animal management.
  • Removing rubbish and monitoring illegal dumping.
  • Undertaking compliance and education activities.
  • Ensuring the security, care and maintenance of all property, plant, equipment, vehicles, vessels and buildings.
  • Other tasks as they arise and as directed.

Essential Requirements:

  • A willingness, desire and ability to learn new skills and maintain/gain qualifications in traditional and contemporary land and sea country management are a must, as is supporting, mentoring and working collaboratively with others in a team environment to actively care for country.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience undertaking traditional and contemporary land and sea country management including cultural burning, weed management and wildlife monitoring.
  • Demonstrated experience leading small teams and mentoring less experienced team members.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the environmental and cultural significance of Ngunya Jargoon IPA, including threats.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience using and maintaining small plant and equipment, including brush cutters, chainsaws, spray packs, GPS and wildlife monitoring cameras.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience undertaking cultural site monitoring activities.
  • Be willing to participate in and contribute to on-country planning, training activities, workshops, conferences, team meetings and collaborate with other mob and stakeholder groups.
  • Be physically capable of undertaking on-country work and maintain a good level of physical fitness. This includes active and ongoing participation in the Jali LALC ranger health and wellness program.
  • Be able to follow and contribute to Workplace Health & Safety requirements, work in a safe manner and follow Jali LALCs Employee Code of Conduct.
  • Hold a Certificate III in Conservation and Ecosystem Management or equivalent. Note: Additional tickets and qualifications relevant to land and sea country management will be highly regarded.
  • Hold a valid (manual) NSW driver's license and have experience using 4WD vehicles off road.
  • Hold a valid NSW working with children clearance or be able to obtain one within four weeks of the commencement of your contract.
