Bower Ecology

Location:

Brisbane, QLD

Bower Ecology is a small, values-driven ecological and environmental consultancy. We provide expert services in ecological assessments, ecological monitoring, conservation planning, strategic project planning, and vegetation and wildlife surveys. Our clients come from a wide range of sectors, including urban development, government, infrastructure, and mine rehabilitation.

We’re looking for a new team member with ecological experience who’s ready to step into a role that balances fieldwork, reporting, strategy, and project coordination.

Who We Are

We’re a team of 10, led by our Managing Director - a consulting ecologist with over 20 years’ experience. We mostly work remotely (with the option to work from our office in Brisbane’s inner south) and the team stays closely connected through Microsoft Teams and regular fieldwork.

Flexibility is part of how we work. As long as communication is clear and expectations are managed, we’re happy to support different working styles. Our culture is collaborative, open, and inclusive to support learning and growth. We care deeply about the work we do and you will be encouraged to pursue continual learning and upskilling.

The Role

This role suits someone who combines sound ecological knowledge with strong attention to detail and project coordination skills - management of projects and staff is a key part of this role. You’ll work on projects primarily in South-east Queensland and the Northern Rivers NSW; and in other parts of Australia. Fieldwork usually runs for a few days at a time - days can be long (8-12 hours depending on conditions), and all hours are paid, including travel.

We’re looking for individuals who like to take initiative, communicate clearly, and want to grow - not just in technical skills, but in how they manage projects and contribute to systems and big picture thinking.

The following skills are key to the role:

  • Ability to lead and manage project tasks, deadlines and risks, including delegation and client communication.
  • An understanding of the NSW, Qld and Commonwealth legislative framework pertaining to ecology / biodiversity - and an ability to determine associated project requirements (e.g. reporting / survey requirements etc).
  • Ability to understand client drivers, and work with them to achieve their goals – whilst balancing ethical and environmental issues.
  • Ability to understand regulator perspectives and processes.
  • Ability to undertake ecological survey (experience in leading botanical or targeted fauna survey methods such as trapping etc. not required, but you may assist others).
  • GIS skills including processing data and preparing maps.
  • Ability to write professional reports, including how to use Microsoft word and excel.
  • Ability to work safe, and ID safety hazards and risks.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in ecology, environmental science, conservation planning or environmental management (or similar)
  • Minimum 5 years experience in an ecological role
  • Minimum 2 years project management experience
