Position Summary
The Senior Environmental Planner is responsible for leading and supporting the planning, assessment, and delivery of environmentally sustainable outcomes for a range of infrastructure, urban development, and natural resource projects across Queensland. This role involves working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, stakeholders, and government agencies to prepare and review environmental planning documents in compliance with local, state, and federal legislation. Flexible work arrangements available, including Brisbane, regional offices, or remote.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the preparation of environmental impact assessments (EIA), environmental management plans, and related documentation under the Environmental Protection Act 1994 (QLD), Planning Act 2016, and Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
- Provide strategic planning advice to clients, project teams, and internal stakeholders.
- Conduct site assessments, constraints analysis, and due diligence studies for proposed developments.
- Manage engagement with regulators, local governments, Traditional Owners, and community stakeholders.
- Mentor and support junior planning and environmental staff.
- Contribute to the preparation of tender proposals, business development, and client relationship management.
- Ensure that environmental planning deliverables meet project timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
- Keep up to date with legislative and policy changes relevant to planning and environmental management in Queensland.
Key Selection Criteria
Essential:
- Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Planning, Environmental Science, Urban and Regional Planning, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 7 years of relevant professional experience in environmental planning and assessment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Queensland and Commonwealth environmental legislation and statutory processes.
- Proven experience preparing EIAs and other statutory planning documents.
- Strong project management skills and ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
- Experience working with GIS tools and data interpretation.
- Eligible for membership with the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) or equivalent professional body.
Desirable:
- Experience in infrastructure, mining, energy, or major development sectors.
- Previous experience with Indigenous engagement and cultural heritage assessments.
- Knowledge of climate change risk assessment and sustainability integration in planning.
