Cape York Natural Resource Management (Cape York NRM) is seeking a dedicated and passionate GIS Officer to play a pivotal role in providing GIS and spatial data services. This role provides an opportunity for a self-motivated, passionate individual with experience in analysing and managing spatial data. Responsibilities of this position include contributing GIS and data management support to project work, managing data collected during field work, providing property and project mapping services and providing GIS technical support to other staff members. The role will also support the management and effective use of the organisation’s relevant spatial and data management tools and systems, such as ARCGIS, Queensland Globe, the Australian Government’s Monitoring Evaluation Reporting and Improvement Tool (MERIT). This position is geared towards someone who is curious and self-motivated, requiring both an eye for detail and a higher-level understanding of GIS and IT systems.
The position contributes to the achievement of project milestones under both state and federal government funding and will contribute to project reporting requirements, such as property mapping and data delivery to support program delivery.
Management Accountability
- Provide specialist technical support in GIS and spatial data analysis.
- Work with IT to develop and maintain the data systems and infrastructure and IT platforms necessary for GIS data storage, processing and dissemination.
- Provide a range of GIS support services in line with the agreed workplan.
- Provide data and information to support grant applications and reporting, internally and for external stakeholders.
- Develop and update the organisation’s spatial data policies and procedures.
- Support and assist other GIS users in understanding and implementing the organisation’s spatial data policies and procedures.
- Lead the development and use of web-based applications and portals for spatial information capture, display and analysis as required.
Technical Responsibilities
- Create high quality maps and mapping outputs for a variety of audiences, including grant applications and project reporting.
- Participate in organisation-wide defined-purpose teams as requested by management to provide technical input on GIS and spatial information management opportunities and requirements.
- Conduct spatial analysis to support ecological and land management projects, utilising GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS) and remote sensing data.
Partnerships and Communication
- Build positive and mutually beneficial working relationships with all staff in the development of project mapping and GIS products in particular the staff who have primary carriage of the projects for which spatial data and information is required.
- Provide mapping support and training in GIS applications to staff as requested by Program Managers
Problem Solving
- Independently apply problem solving approaches to complex issues/situations, ensuring an adequate analysis of necessary and available information, and the appropriate involvement of staff, partners and others.
Organisation wide responsibilities
- Participate as required in multidisciplinary, skills and experience based internal working groups.
- Participate in performance review processes.
- Actively support the mission and values of Cape York NRM.
- Perform all duties in accordance with Cape York NRM’s policies, procedures and code of conduct.
- Actively promote and foster a culture in which all managers and employees comply with Workplace Health and Safety provisions and legislated employment regulations in each workplace.
- Keep Cape York NRM management informed of organisational and project issues and challenges that need to be addressed and actively managed.
Selection Criteria
- Applied skills with geodatabases and relational database systems.
- Familiarity with spatial data capture and data sources used in a natural resources and/or land management context, e.g. cadastral data, planning schemes, biodiversity data, drone and remote sensing data sets etc.
- Demonstrated data management skills, including the use and manipulation of complex databases and spreadsheets, and a basic understanding of database structures.
- Thorough knowledge of and skills in the use of GIS software packages, including ArcGIS, and proven ability to produce high quality maps to satisfy a range of audiences and stakeholders.
- Good communication skills with other staff, senior management, and external stakeholders in the provision of GIS support.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and problem solve in the area of GIS mapping and data management.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experiences to adhere to Workplace Health and Safety regulations and demonstrated awareness of requirements of Employment Equity, Ethical Conduct and the Anti-Discrimination Act.
