The Broome Bird Observatory (BBO) is seeking a passionate Assistant Warden to help run our not-for-profit eco-tourism bird observatory while experiencing some of Australia’s most incredible birding, wildlife, living on the shores of Roebuck Bay (just 25 mins South of Broome).

This is an exciting chance to gain hands-on skills in conservation, tourism, guiding, and research while living in a world-renowned birdwatching destination. Choose between either a 4-month or 8-month placement and become part of a small, dedicated team working to support shorebird conservation, awareness raising and eco-tourism.

About the Role

Assistant Wardens are responsible for helping the Wardens manage day-to-day operations at the BBO. This role is varied and involves a mix of eco-tourism, conservation, and hospitality duties, including:

  • Guiding & Tours - Assist with or lead birdwatching tours and guest transfers. A Passenger Transport Authority (PTA) License is required for driving guests and must be obtained before or upon arrival (BBO will reimburse costs).
  • Guest Services & Accommodation - Welcome visitors, manage bookings, assist with housekeeping, and ensure an enjoyable guest experience.
  • Eco-Tourism & Operations - Support the BBO shop, and help with yard and facility maintenance.
  • Conservation & Research Support - Participate in Migration Watch, assist with ongoing shorebird studies, and support visiting researchers with fieldwork.

Who Should Apply?

Those that are:

  • Passionate about birds, wildlife conservation, eco-tourism, or outdoor education.
  • Comfortable working in a small, close-knit team in a remote and rugged location (Snakes and spiders are a daily occurrence).
  • Flexible and willing to take on a range of responsibilities, from tour guiding to guest services (toilet cleaning).
  • Hold a manual driver’s license and is willing to obtain a Passenger Transport Authority (PTA) License before or upon arrival (mandatory for guest transport).
  • Experience in bird identification, guiding, hospitality, or conservation is beneficial but not required.

Placement Options

  • 4-month placement (March - June or July - October)
  • 8-month placement (March - October)

This is a volunteer/internship position, with a small weekly living allowance, on-site accommodation.
