Abzeco is an Eltham based ecological consulting practice (part of the PF Olsen group au.pfolsen.com) with expertise in flora and fauna survey and monitoring, Bushfire Management Plans, Habitat Hectare Assessments, Biodiversity Assessment Reports, Land Management Plans, Offset Management Plans, ecological management and restoration, weed mapping, salvage and translocation of threatened flora and fauna species, design and implementation of pest control programs and expert environmental and conservation planning advice. Abzeco staff are accredited Offset Traders and accredited Offset Site Assessors of Victorian native vegetation offset sites and undertake site assessments and the establishment of Victorian native vegetation offset sites and Commonwealth Environmental Offsets.

About the role:

We are seeking a full-time Senior Ecological Consultant (with flexibility to work from home) who's comfortable working in remote and regional areas on occasion. Much of the work you will complete involves conducting and co-ordinating flora, fauna and ecological field surveys including GIS mapping (supported by an internal GIS specialist), writing proposals and providing reporting across a wide range of projects for a diverse range of new and established long-term clients including, private landowners, Local Councils, Parks Victoria, the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, Water Authorities etc.

Our ideal candidate will be well-organised, have excellent writing skills and be a great communicator with a solutions-focused attitude, capable of working independently and within a team.

Additionally, this person will support and manage a Field Ecologist who'll report through to this role. This will involve allocating and overseeing the Field Ecologist's work and providing technical guidance directly, it will also require the facilitation of technical mentoring from other senior and principal ecologists in the team to deliver different client projects.

Your everyday responsibilities will include:

  • Proposal writing.
  • Report writing including though not limited to biodiversity assessment reports, native vegetation clearing reports, land management plans, ecological monitoring reports (and development of monitoring methods), state and federal offset site assessment reports, management plans and monitoring reporting templates.
  • Internal peer review of client reports.
  • Providing technical environmental advice to clients and team members.
  • Effective client communication to build and maintain good working relationships with clients.
  • Flora and fauna surveys.
  • Habitat hectare assessments.
  • Targeted threatened species surveys.
  • Ecological impact assessments.
  • Pest plant & pest animal surveys.
  • Vegetation monitoring.
  • Addressing environmental permit conditions and referral submissions.
  • Providing day-to-day support and guidance to junior ecologists.

To be considered for this role, you will have:

  • Minimum seven years' experience in an environmental consultancy or the public sector including undertaking ecological/ environmental surveys and report production.
  • Current Vegetation Quality Assessment (VQA) Competency Check.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Ecology, Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Natural Resources or a related field.
  • A high level of flora and/or fauna identification skills.
  • A good working knowledge of Commonwealth, Victorian State legislation and local government planning laws and policy.
  • A genuine desire to support, manage and develop other team members.
