The Planning Section prepares and reviews marine and terrestrial management plans for Conservation and Land Management Act lands, provides advice and support to the Conservation and Parks Commission, and provides specialised Geographical Information Systems (GIS) services including data collation, analysis and mapping. In addition, the Planning Section develops relationships with Traditional Owners to facilitate Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUAs) and Joint Management Agreements (JMAs) for jointly managed areas of conservation estate.

We are seeking to establish a pool of suitable candidates for the role of Marine Conservation Officer (Planning).

Under immediate (Specified Calling Level 1) or general (Specified Calling Level 2) direction, you will:

  • Undertake (SC2) or assist in (SC1) the preparation of management plans for marine conservation reserves, including joint management plans.
  • Collect and integrate (SC2) or assist in collection and integration (SC1) of social, cultural and ecological research into the marine planning process.
  • Undertake (SC2) or assist with (SC1) consultation in preparation of marine reserve management plans; and supervise staff as required (SC2).

Selection Criteria

  1. A Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant discipline (marine or natural sciences or natural resource management), or an approved equivalent qualification.
  2. Considerable (SC2) or sound (SC1) experience in marine protected area planning, including experience in joint management planning and a good understanding of marine reserve management planning principles, techniques and procedures
  3. Considerable (SC2) or sound (SC1) demonstrated experience in and knowledge of the management of marine ecosystems or coastal management, and the environmental, social, cultural and economic issues associated with marine protected area management.
  4. Demonstrated well-developed (SC2) or good (SC1) interpersonal skills and experience in liaising with a range of stakeholders, including Traditional Owners, local and state government, peak bodies, special interest groups and individuals in regard to natural resource management issues.
