We are looking for a Principal Advisor and Team Leader - Soils Science to lead our team of expert scientists, provide cutting-edge scientific advice, and shape soil and landscape policies that will benefit generations to come.

As a recognised expert in soil science, you will play a pivotal role in driving strategic soil and landscape outcomes for South Australia. This is more than just a leadership position - it's an opportunity to influence environmental policy and decision-making at the highest levels.

Working closely with key partners such as the Department of Primary Industries and Regions (PIRSA), universities, and the Commonwealth Government, you will ensure that our scientific advice is credible, rigorous, and purpose-driven. You will also lead the charge in delivering valuable user outcomes from South Australia's modernised soils data and information systems.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing high-level scientific advice to support strategic soil and landscape management.
  • Leading and coordinating the work of the Soil Science team within the Science and Information Branch.
  • Ensuring all scientific outputs are robust, fit for purpose, and aligned with policy objectives.
  • Overseeing joint programs with PIRSA and leading initiatives that harness cutting-edge soil data systems.
  • Building strong, collaborative partnerships with internal stakeholders, universities, and government bodies.

We're seeking someone with a proven track record in soil science leadership who can inspire a team and collaborate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders. You'll be adept at turning complex scientific data into clear, actionable insights for policy makers and land managers.

You will also need:

  • Expertise in soil science, landscape management, or environmental science.
  • A background in providing strategic and technical leadership within scientific teams.
  • Strong collaborative skills to build effective partnerships across departments, academia, and government.
  • A visionary approach to modernising soil data systems to meet future needs.
  • Ability to translate scientific research into practical, real-world solutions that support sustainable land management.

Contract:

Contract for up to 2 years.

Essential Qualifications:

A post-graduate soil science major in a relevant Science or Natural Resource Management discipline is essential.

Special Conditions:

  • May be required to participate in fire management or associated duties.
  • A current class 'C' driver's licence and willingness to drive is desirable.
  • Some out of hours work may be required.
  • May be required to undertake intra or interstate travel and work outside of the normal hours of work.

Remuneration:

PO4 - $110,696 min - $120,470 max p.a.
