About the role

Land and Sea Department - ALC Rangers

The Land & Sea Department works with Traditional Owners to manage and care for country. The ALC Rangers assist Traditional Owners to meet their cultural responsibilities and aspirations for managing traditional homelands, protecting and passing on knowledge and law to future generations, and creating a sustainable and culturally appropriate economy across Aboriginal lands. The Rangers work in partnership with community organisations, both on Groote Eylandt and mainland Australia, industry and government departments and currently manage a range of projects with approximately 20 staff across the Groote Archipelago. Projects are diverse and include, but are not limited to: threatened species management, quarantine and biosecurity, asset maintenance, compliance and enforcement with fisheries legislation and ALC's recreation permit system relevant to the Aboriginal Lands Act, weed control, education and community awareness, ecological research, search and rescue activities and cultural resource management.

The Land and Sea Department works to protect the biodiversity, cultural and recreational values of the Groote Archipelago through the Jobs Land and Economy Program, Working on Country (WoC) and Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) funding streams provided by the State and Federal government.

Position

The Ranger & IPA Operations Coordinator will work as part of the Land & Sea Department to protect the environmental, cultural and social values of the Groote Archipelago primarily through the Commonwealth funded Working on Country (WoC) and Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) programs and will be responsible for delivering the operational objectives of the WoC and IPA programs, through ensuring that the actions outlined in Anindilyakwa IPA POM (Plan of Management 2016), and associated management plans are incorporated into the annual Ranger work plans, ensuring that the Rangers undertake appropriate training and capacity building activities to successfully carry out these requirements, and by organising appropriate collaborations with researchers and other appropriate stakeholders that have the potential to assist in meeting the management plan requirements and Anindilyakwa community expectations.

Remuneration

In addition to a competitive salary, the remuneration package for this role includes:

  • 10% Superannuation.
  • 5 weeks annual leave per annum, with 17.5% leave loading.
  • 18 days person leave per annum.
  • Furnished housing, including electricity and water.
  • Relocation Allowance.
  • Annual Holiday Travel Allowance.
  • Salary sacrificing.
  • 10 business day shutdown period over Christmas/New Year - paid at standard rates (no need to use your annual leave).

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  1. A relevant tertiary qualification and well demonstrated relevant experience in environmental planning, natural resource management or a related field.
  2. Demonstrated experience in onboarding, coordinating and supervising a team to undertake on-ground work activities related to the management of biodiversity and/or cultural values (eg flora and fauna surveys, threatened species monitoring and management, invasive species monitoring and management, coastal management, rock art and sacred site management).
  3. Experience working with remote communities.
  4. Proven high level interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to liaise, influence, negotiate and consult with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including Traditional Owners, government organisations, research institutions, other ranger groups etc.
  5. Knowledge of Aboriginal culture and society together with an ability to communicate and build relationships effectively with Aboriginal people, along with demonstrated experience in, or commitment to, indigenous capacity building through mentoring, training and development.
  6. Computer skills (experience with the Microsoft Office suite), basic ArcGIS or similar mapping skills accompanied with the ability to complete accurate project and grant acquittal reports and other administrative tasks on a timely basis.
  7. Proven experience in sourcing external funding such as grants and/or fee-for-service work.
  8. Current C Class driver's licence and 4WD experience.
  9. Understanding of relevant workplace legislation, particularly relating to work health and safety.
  10. Excellent organisation and time management skills.
  11. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality when dealing with highly sensitive matters.
  12. Ability to obtain Ochre care working with children clearance.

Desirable:

  1. Scientific background and deep understanding of ecosystem functions and establishing and maintaining environmental monitoring programs.
  2. Mechanical aptitude (vehicles, vessels).
