Hazeldean Forest Farm is seeking to employ a leading hand to assist in organic orchard production, harvesting and distribution.

About the farm

Hazeldean Forest Farm is a leading organic farm that produces certified organic fruits, nuts, veggies, cider & apple cider vinegar – that are sold wholesale and through home delivery service like Ceres Fair Food, farmers markets, organic retailers and restaurants. Jason and Marg Alexandra established Hazeldean Forest Farm and they have been farming ecologically and producing quality certified organic produce since 1986.

About the role

This is an ideal role for somebody interested in becoming more involved with organic farming and food production.

The person who takes on this role will be involved in all aspects of orchard production, harvesting and distribution. Ideally they will have experience in horticulture and agriculture and be keen and willing to learn on the job.

The job will involve the hands on, practical work of growing, harvesting and distributing fresh fruit and value added products – including our cider and ACV. The ideal candidate will come with relevant experience and capabilities and be expected to grow into the role through on-the-job training. The position will start in late January or early February 2022.

Ability and willingness to undertake some weekend work is required and a suitable candidate will be expected to represent the farm, selling produce at farmers markets.

In addition to the leading hand position we will also be looking to employ seasonal fruit pickers between February and April. All wages are paid at award rates or better.

Selection criteria

The following selection criteria apply:

  1. Experience in horticulture and agriculture, including with using tractors, implements and other farm equipment
  2. Demonstrated ability to undertake a wide range of tasks involved in horticultural production - such as pruning, mowing, harvesting and packing – or equivalent experience
  3. Demonstrated capabilities in working as part of small team, and taking responsibilities for assigned roles
  4. Capabilities in working to a high standard and efficiently, at times with minimal supervision
  5. Ability to represent the farm, selling produce directly to wholesale customers and at farmers markets.
  6. A valid licence for operating on-road motor vehicles and forklifts.

In addition, to above criteria, a demonstrated interest in ecology and organic farming is preferable, as are capabilities in promoting and growing the business, including marketing via direct contacts and social media.
