The Indigenous Desert Alliance (IDA) is a member-organisation which empowers Indigenous rangers managing Australia's Desert Country to realise their social/cultural, environmental and economic aspirations. 

We do this through supporting capacity-building events, activities and projects for rangers and ranger teams; enhancing regional collaboration; and enabling one strong voice for the desert. The Ranger Development Program is a support program designed by and for desert-based rangers. It supports ranger teams to address their developmental priorities while building the skills of rangers through project-based learning. The RDP enhances the connection of rangers across the desert and supports the sharing of knowledge through regional networks and events.


The Ranger Development Officer will be responsible for developing and delivering the IDA’s Ranger Development Program to the members of the IDA in South West of the desert.

The position will work closely with the Manager, Ranger and Sector Development Manager and Program Leader, Ranger Development to: 

  1. Provide direct mentoring and support to desert-based ranger teams;
  2. Co-design and deliver regional workshops, exchanges and events;
  3. Provide program development and management support; and
  4. Participate as a member of the IDA team.
  5. Other tasks as directed

 In a bit more detail, the role will require you to…

  • Engage with IDA members and identify program participants (ranger teams)
  • Build strong working relationships with ranger teams through regular on-country visits and frequent communication
  • Identify ranger team and individual ranger support and development priorities
  • Work with rangers to create individual or team development plans
  • Provide project development and management support to local and regional projects
  • Work with program participants to plan and deliver regional ranger development workshops
  • Seek input and feedback from program participants for continual co-design of the program
  • Provide support to core IDA events including the annual conference, Southern Desert Ranger Forum and other regional events
  • Create detailed logistics and safety plans for remote travel

 You will need the following Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • Degree or experience in community development, social sciences, training and assessment, anthropology or natural resource management
  • Experience working respectfully and in partnership with Indigenous people
  • Experience of working in remote locations, preferably desert-based experience
  • High level written and oral communication skills and high level active listening skills
  • Experience in project or program management
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel remotely

And ideally, you will also have:

  • Experience in mentoring, training and development or similar programs
  • Indigenous land management knowledge
  • Good understanding of remote Indigenous social, cultural and economic context
  • Relevant field work related certificates (4WD, CPR and first aid)
