Attractive salary

CRC CARE Pty Ltd is a world-leader in the prevention and remediation of contamination. Contribute to a cleaner environment by managing our research program and helping commercialise our innovations.

Location: Newcastle, NSW (based at the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan Campus)

CRC CARE was established under the Australian Government’s Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) Program in 2005 to bring together Australia’s foremost expertise in science, industry and government in a partnership for the development, commercialisation and extension of advanced technologies and methods for:

  • assessing contamination risks in land, groundwater and air
  • managing and/or remediating contamination
  • developing safe options for land use and the reuse of wastes on land
  • developing solutions that are acceptable to environmental regulatory agencies and the public
  • capacity building.

Following initial funding for 7 years in 2005, CRC CARE won support for an additional 9 years from its partner organisations and the Australian Government. The CRC concluded the activities funded through this partnership on 30 June 2021. Given CRC CARE’s central role in assisting both environmental regulatory agencies and major end-user partners, these bodies are supporting CRC CARE’s continuation beyond 1 July 2021 for an additional 10 years. Funding will be provided in blocks of three years, with the funding of future blocks based on CRC CARE’s ability to meet agreed-upon milestones.

CRC CARE is recognised globally for its excellence in research and innovation, through which it has become a world-leader in the prevention and remediation of environmental contamination. The Director, Research Innovation and Utilisation will drive research excellence in CRC CARE’s research programs and further develop CRC CARE’s global pre-eminence in its field of expertise.

The role

As Director, Research Innovation and Utilisation, you will be fully accountable to the Managing Director for the management of all research projects, and will provide support to the Industry Training Program.

While maintaining its independence as a research institute, CRC CARE aspires to be the Battelle of the ASEAN region. This will require significant success with training and other commercial activities without compromising the CRC’s capacity to continue as an independent and autonomous research body. You will ensure project delivery and reporting excellence, maintain regular communication with industry partners, and help strengthen CRC CARE’s engagement with industry more generally.

What you'll do:

  • Manage and further develop the National Contaminated Sites Demonstration Program by maintaining effective stakeholder relations while managing research activities and milestones prior to evaluation by the Managing Director.
  • Monitor CRC CARE’s research projects to ensure the quality of the science and the timely delivery of agreed outputs, and provide reports on the research program’s progress to the Board and Advisory Committees through the Managing Director.
  • Ensure harmonisation between projects and programs.
  • Ensure effective operation of linkages with industry and government end users, including environmental regulators.
  • Identify skills and staff issues that need to be addressed with regards to research projects and implement corrective strategies and actions.
  • Identify and coordinate applications for funding on agreed subject areas and initiatives, to support CRC CARE overheads and achieve better-than-breakeven financial results.
  • Monitor workplace health and safety issues related to all CRC CARE activities to ensure they are identified and that appropriate systems are in place, ongoing audits are conducted, and issues addressed. Ensure that necessary work-related research permits have been obtained in all CRC CARE activities.
  • Provide guidance and support to the industry training manager to ensure significant surpluses are generated from training and capacity building initiatives.
  • Manage CRC CARE’s existing intellectual property (IP) portfolio and all emerging IP from new activities, as well as ensure that appropriate IP protection and exploitation strategies are in place and actioned.
