Groundwater is an incredibly important resource in Australia. With climate change, population growth and increasing groundwater developments across the country, groundwater is expected to become an increasingly important into the future. There is a growing need for research that can inform groundwater management, both in Australia and internationally.

We are looking for domestic applicants for an exciting PhD project based on the analysis of continental-scale groundwater data. The project comes with a fully funded PhD scholarship (3.5 years) and a generous top-up.

The successful applicant will focus on the collation of an Australia-wide database of groundwater geochemical and isotopic data. The dataset will be utilised to explore spatial and temporal variations in groundwater-related processes and to determine groundwater residence times. The project will include both desktop and field-based work in various parts of the country.

The Research Institute for the Environment & Livelihoods (RIEL) provides a vibrant, multidisciplinary research environment that currently comprises around 50 scientists and 60 PhD students. RIEL offers excellent research training for postgraduate students, with generous research support, frequent skill development workshops and excellent networking opportunities with all levels of government.

Charles Darwin University is also a member of the National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training (NCGRT), which brings together over 200 Australian and international researchers, and provides networking opportunities with other PhD candidates across Australia.


Applicants are required to have a MSc or a BSc with 1st class honours (or equivalent) in a relevant science discipline such as environmental science, hydrology, hydrogeology, or engineering.

It is preferable that the applicant has robust programming/scripting skills (Python, R, or MATLAB), or be willing to learn.


The RTP living allowance is $28,854 per year (2022 rate) free of tax. The value of an additional top-up scholarship can be discussed with project supervisors based on merit and experience of the applicant.


Project must begin before the end of 2022. The position will remain open until filled or until the end of 2022, whichever occurs first.
