GMHS has been successfully in operation for over 25 years, servicing clients in locations across Greater Melbourne with our qualified and trained team. GMHS is comprised of a multidisciplinary team consisting of Natural Resource Management (NRM), Civil and a Fabrication workshop. We aim to be a one-stop organisation servicing our clients across the water industry, utility services, local government, as well as the broader community. The Natural Resource Management team at GMHS are passionate about the environment, environmental management whilst safely, effectively, and successfully delivering and contributing to positive outcomes for our clients and the community spaces they maintain and enhance.

The NRM team are responsible for the delivery of a variety of environmental and natural resource management activities and works including but not limited to, the maintenance of assets and the delivery of natural resource projects, Revegetation and plant maintenance, weed management including aquatic weed management, litter removal, construction of bank stabilisation, and bird netting installation.

About the Role

The Leading Hand - NRM provides infield oversight and works with our NRM Field Crews to deliver a variety of environmental and natural resource management activities. The Leading Hand - NRM assists the NRM Supervisor with the onsite organisation of crews, resources, and materials to enable seamless works implementation and service delivery.

As the NRM Leading Hand you will be responsible for leading the GMHS NRM team and assisting in the management and delivery of projects, working alongside our clients including Melbourne Water and local government. You will lead our NRM crews and provide in field oversight and leadership of operational delivery by working with crews undertaking various environmental and natural resource management and maintenance activities.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience and capabilities working within and leading field crews in an environmental and natural resource management and maintenance environment.
  • Certificate or Diploma in Conservation and Land Management disciplines and/or extensive relevant related land or natural resource management work experience
  • Ability to take responsibility for ensuring own and team members physical and psychological wellbeing and safety.
  • A drive and ability to trouble shoot, apply problem solving skills, identify innovation and implement solutions with others to achieve on ground quality, safety, technical and productivity outcomes.
  • Actively contribute to trying different approaches and taking responsibility for improvement actions.
  • Sound self-awareness, people leadership and communication skills, with an ability to work in a team environment and proactively communicate clearly and effectively with a range of people
  • Knowledge and experience in basic computer use and online management systems including iPads.
  • Advanced indigenous and exotic plant identification skills.
  • Competency and knowledge in a variety of land and environmental management techniques and methodologies including revegetation, weed control and herbicide application.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislative requirements.
  • Understand the zoning and spacing of plants for revegetation works, materials and techniques.
  • Competent use and ability to teach others about safe operation of tools, small plant and equipment including Quikspray, brush cutters, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, pumps, water tanks, powered hand tools, spray/knapsacks, dabbers, augers, blowers, loppers, secateurs, hand saws, mattocks, mallets, cobbler gun and tongs/pickers.
  • Other qualifications are desirable including Chainsaw Ticket, First Aid Level 2, White Card, ACUP.

Other requirements:

  • Ability to maintain physical fitness and co-ordination skills for manual tasks completed.
  • Criminal records check and medical assessment if required.
  • Current Victorian Manual Drivers Licence.
  • Ability to meet other duties as required by Supervisor from time to time, including additional hours outside of normal business to meet workload requirements.
  • Travel will be required, and this may require driving for extended periods.
