Abzeco are seeking expressions of interest from individuals who are passionate about plant ecology and biodiversity management for our Field Crew Team. We have several casual positions to fill, with potential for full time contracts for the right candidates.     

The Field Crew’s primary role is fulfilling contract and Land Management services for public and private sector clients throughout both natural and civil landscapes. Abzeco has developed a highly skilled and qualified team that specialise in the restoration of native vegetation with a focus on natural temperate grasslands, grassy woodlands, and threatened native flora and fauna. We also provide staff diverse opportunities on environmental management and survey projects throughout Victoria.

Potential new crew members would be highly motivated individuals who enjoy the outdoors and physical work, thrive as part of a collaborative team, embrace coaching, and are keen to learn about grassland ecology and management techniques.

Primary tasks of the field crew include:

  • Weed control
  • Pruning, mowing and brush-cutting
  • Seed collection
  • Direct seeding
  • Planting and maintenance of planted areas
  • Identification of flora and fauna
  • Site surveillance and reporting
  • Chainsaw use

The vast majority of our work involves herbicide use to manage weeds in endangered high quality remnant grasslands and grassy woodlands on the Victorian Volcanic Plain in Western Melbourne. We constantly seek out new work in these habitats throughout Victoria and this kind of work is part of our core business at Abzeco. We are seeking applicants that have a passion for these ecosystems and the broader natural environment. Essential skills and requirements:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or experience
  • Construction Industry White Card
  • Current manual drivers licence
  • Passionate about our natural environment
  • Enjoy physical work and able to work in full days in all weather
  • Practical intuition
  • Comfortable following direction and working under supervision
  • Able to work collaboratively, safely and productively in small and large groups, and on occasion individually in an autonomous manner
  • Can navigate difficult situations and actively problem solve, including both technically and socially challenging scenarios
  • Ability to identify workplace risks and manage in accordance with company safety policies and procedures
  • Punctual and reliable, well presented and professional manner of conduct
  • Able to attend work at a Sunshine North-based depot

Desirable skills and certificates:

  • Agricultural Chemical Users Permit (ACUP)
  • First Aid Level 2
  • Chainsaw Users Certificate – Level 1 and 2
  • Experience working or volunteering in conservation, horticulture or landscaping
  • Strong plant identification skills, or the ability to quickly learn weeds and native plants
  • Expertise in safe handling of chainsaws, brushcutters, mowers and other small power tools
  • Expertise in the safe handling of scheduled chemicals, predominantly herbicides
