The role

Cardno’s Water & Environment team provides strategic and practical solutions to clients with environmental management challenges. We are currently seeking a Senior Ecologist to join our Melbourne based team and take a lead role in developing and mentoring our growing team in Victoria. You will benefit from being part of a national ecology and environmental services team that has industry experts across Marine, Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecology and a range of exciting projects within Victoria and across the Asia Pacific Region.

Our Melbourne CBD Office is centrally located close to public transport and cafes and has a free on-site gym. Your responsibilities will include -

  • Providing advice to a variety of infrastructure and natural resource management projects for private and public sector clients
  • Leading and coordinating environmental surveys and impact assessments of terrestrial ecosystems, specifically flora and fauna, biodiversity and habitat
  • Delivering environmental analysis, research and field surveys
  • Provision of specific technical input into studies and major projects as appropriate
  • Preparation of technical written reports to support project outcomes
  • Maintaining key relationships with internal and external clients while actively pursuing new business opportunities
  • Acting as a professional mentor to junior staff and assisting with their professional development

About you

Ideally you will possess -

  • Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science and/or Ecology
  • Demonstrated identification skills in Victorian flora, fauna and ecological communities
  • Minimum five years post graduate experience ideally within a consulting, construction, or regulatory environment
  • Demonstrated data collection experience, including use of field collection software and mapping tools
  • Solid understanding of Commonwealth, state and local government environmental regulations and their application as well as relevant industry standards, practices and approvals processes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to liaise with internal/external clients as well as develop skills in junior staff
  • Driver’s license essential, 4wd experience and VQA accreditation preferable
  • Strong commercial acumen to financially manage projects and seek out new business development opportunities
  • Flexibility to travel occasionally

 Physical Requirements

  • Position includes both office and fieldwork and the applicant must be physically able to stand and work in the field including in remote areas for extended periods of time.
