About the position:

This position will be responsible for leading a local River Repair Bus and various volunteer teams, including coordinating the Bus Volunteer work program and supervising/training participants and achieving on-ground outcomes against specific projects in the local area of operations.

The position operates under the supervision of and working closely with, Program Manager – Murray Darling Basin and Project Manager – Central Basin.

The River Repair Bus provides a unique model of community engagement in river habitat restoration and is equipped with the required tools/PPE to plant and maintain native vegetation, build habitat for aquatic and terrestrial species, undertake rubbish clean ups, and upskill participants on these areas. The River Repair Bus will also be made available to provide educational demonstrations and displays at appropriate events.

The Team leader – River Repair Bus, supported by the Program Manager – Murray Darling Basin, Project Manager – Central Basin and OzFish national operations team will successfully run the day-to-day operations of the Bus and source partnerships, funding, and other resources for its future continuing operations. The Team leader – River Repair Bus responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinating the work program for the River Repair Bus with the Program Manager-Murray Darling Basin and other stakeholders as directed
  • Ensuring volunteer work tasks at each site are skill appropriate to participants
  • Ensuring the River Repair Bus is maintained and fully equipped for its weekly work program, including wet weather contingencies and considerations for safety and skill level of participants
  • Driving the River Repair Bus to the designated work sites and managing volunteers in appropriate tasks
  • Guide volunteer participants to build their hands-on skills and experience in natural resource management and bush regeneration
  • Managing site tasks including (but not limited to); native tree planting and maintaining plantings, rubbish removal and building of habitat for aquatic and terrestrial species
  • Identify and develop project opportunities with the relevant councils, regional and state agencies
  • Provide desktop and administrative support to fish habitat restoration projects, which includes but not limited to, communication, permits and budgeting
  • Provide educational demonstrations and displays at appropriate events (may include school activities)
  • Follow all administrative tasks and guidelines established by OzFish Unlimited daily
  • Ensuring all participants follow all health and safety policies and procedures established by OzFish Unlimited daily 

Below are the required and advantageous skills for the Team leader – River Repair Bus position:

Required skills:

  1. Certificate 4 in Conservation and Land Management
  2. Current chemical application certification
  3. Certificate 4 in Training and Assessment
  4. Relevant experience in a variety of environmental and natural resource management techniques and methodologies (revegetation, weed control, habitat construction)
  5. Experience working with community volunteers from all backgrounds, including those who may be socially disadvantaged and under privileged
  6. Excellent local networks with stakeholders in natural resource management and with volunteering/participant providers
  7. Demonstrated high level of skills in Outlook, Excel, Word and Powerpoint software
  8. Demonstrated high standards in safety and work planning, including wet weather contingency
  9. Hold current first aid certificate
  10. Willingness to travel in the local area daily and hold current driver’s licence

Advantageous skills:

  1. Strong connections to the local fishing community
  2. Current chainsaw certification, boat licence, working with children check
  3. Experience in the development, monitoring and reporting on restoration projects
  4. Knowledge of indigenous and exotic flora species identification
  5. Note that a police check, health check and driver safety record will be necessary for this position
