The Murray Darling Association (MDA) is the peak body for local government in the Murray-Darling Basin, informing government policy and contributing local knowledge and regional solutions since 1944. There are 167 local communities within the Murray Darling Basin across Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia.

The MDA’s purpose is to provide information, facilitate discussion and seek to inform and shape government policy on the management of water and other Basin resources. Local communities need certainty and reliability of supply to support the residents and businesses who live, work and play within the Basin. The allocation, sustainability, availability and affordability of water resources is recognised as a critical factor in the environmental, social, cultural, and economic health and stability of our nation.

We work with and for member councils, engaging with national and state-based local government associations, regional organisations of councils, community members and leaders, federal and state governments and their agencies to understand local issues and identify regional solutions. The MDA Board meets monthly and is comprised of the Chairs of our 12 regions.

The new Chief Executive Officer will likely come from local government, but if you know local government and can be a fierce advocate for Basin communities, we want to hear from you. We are not seeking a CEO who has fixed views on water politics but a person who can navigate the many views and positions of the governments involved and the Basin communities. Business, leadership and management skills are therefore critical.

Considerable travel is involved and the head office can be located anywhere within an hour of a regional airport. As an example, Albury and Canberra may be ideal.
