The University of Queensland’s Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) is a world-leading mining research institute committed to developing knowledge-based solutions to meet the global sustainability challenges facing society. The work of SMI is transdisciplinary, independent, impartial and rigorous. Our research integrates the expertise of mineral exploration, development and production, environment and social science, and health and safety specialists to deliver sustainable mineral resource development and train the next generation of mining industry and community leaders.

SMI is comprised of six research centres and a Centre of Excellence in Chile. In addition to the depth of expertise within each Centre, SMI has developed five ‘cross-cutting’ Strategic Research Programs to address global mining challenges.

WH Bryan Mining Geology Research Centre (BRC)

The WH Bryan Mining Geology Research Centre supports the optimal application of geoscientific knowledge across the mining value chain. The team contributes to solving the challenges associated with mineral discovery, extraction of orebody knowledge, and transformation and characterisation of mine wastes, by engaging with a wide range of research organisations and stakeholders, in Australia and internationally. The Centre’s research is funded principally by mining companies and government geoscientific organisations.

About This Opportunity

In the face of diminishing returns from surface exploration and increasing social and environmental challenges, the mining industry is being forced to switch focus to the search for and evaluation of buried orebodies that could be amenable to bulk underground mining. A substantial body of new exploration and development technology is being developed to assist the mining geologist in this new task; but this is not reflected in most training courses available at this time.

The BRC has committed to the education of the mining geology and research in this space, through the establishment of a Deep Mining Geology Group (DMG) within the BRC. This group is to be headed by a Professor of Mining Geology

The successful appointee will be required to develop a strongly industry-collaborative program of applied research and knowledge transfer in the area of Deep Mining Geology. This is an outstanding opportunity for a candidate who combines industry and academic experience to build a world-leading research initiative to address the key challenges relating to deep mining geology, and to build a professional development program focussing on the complex and unique skill set required for modern and future mining and exploration geologists.

This position is located at UQ’s Indooroopilly Site in suburban Brisbane adjacent to the University’s Experimental Mine.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are seeking strongly motivated candidates who possess a completed PhD in an area related to mining geology and have practical mining industry experience in operating mines, an established profile in knowledge-leadership in mining geology, and an internationally-developing or existing profile coupled with an established record of publications in reputed refereed journals; and also a record of presenting at industry and academic conferences.

In addition to the above pre-requisites, the successful appointee must have the following skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial passion and ability to build an externally/industry-funded initiative.
  • Clear capacity to work effectively in a positive and collaborative team environment.
  • Good all-round knowledge and fluency across the geoscientific and related themes relevant to mining geology.
  • Solid practical experience in the underground mining environment.
  • Experience in formulation, promotion and delivery of industry-focused short-courses.
  • Evidence of successful mentoring of early career academics in teaching, research and research supervision.
