Are you looking for a dynamic and rewarding role where you get to make a real difference for people and nature in the Northern Territory? 

We are looking for a new Communications Officer to work with us on positive, public-facing campaigns to protect the Territory’s iconic rivers and secure increased investment in practical conservation and land management work.

This Darwin-based role is an excellent opportunity for an individual with strong media and public-facing communication skills to support environmental advocacy in the Northern Territory.

What you’ll be working on:

The Territory Outback campaign is a collaborative initiative supported by the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Environment Centre Northern Territory (ECNT) that aims to secure better outcomes for people and nature in Outback landscapes in the Northern Territory.

The campaign aims to build public and political support for conservation and land management in the Northern Territory, with two primary focus areas:

  1. Supporting local communities to protect the long-term health of Northern Territory rivers, particularly raising the profile of key threats, sustainable development opportunities and protecting the local communities and wildlife that rely on these rivers and floodplains. 
  2. Promoting increased government investment and community engagement in managing key threats to nature, with a particular focus on invasive weeds and destructive wildfires.

Purpose of the role

Based in Darwin, the Communications Officer will make a real difference to protecting nature and communities in the Northern Territory.

The Communications Officer will lead on public communications and media strategies that shift attitudes, build support and influence politics to meet campaign goals and create a brighter future for the Northern Territory.


  1.  Proactively identify news and other story opportunities, and manage liaison with a network of reporters, newsrooms and other influencers, in collaboration with the campaign team.
  2. Lead the development of communications tools, such as campaign websites, and implementation of a digital communications plan across relevant social media channels in collaboration with the campaign team.
  3. Work directly with community engagement officers to build supporter engagement and achieve public engagement targets across all relevant platforms and channels.
  4. Manage the development and production of communications materials and their marketing.
  5. Work with other team members to generate compelling content and manage its impact across digital platforms.
  6. Provide communications advice to other members of the campaign team.


The fee scale per annum ranges from $75,000 - $85,000 negotiable on skills and experience plus 9.5% superannuation. It is expected that the brief will require a workload of 5 days per week.

Selection criteria

  1. Motivation to achieve great outcomes for nature and local communities.
  2. 4-6 years’ experience in a media relations, journalism, public affairs or similar role. Advocacy or political campaign experience a significant benefit.
  3. Demonstrated ability to think strategically, creatively and laterally to identify opportunities that win campaigns.
  4. A track record of success in working with media, including a proven ability to generate coverage across a range of broadcast and print media including mass market, consumer and online/social media.
  5. Proven ability to produce engaging content for social media and other digital channels.
  6. Excellent skills in writing for diverse audiences, including for news and online engagement.
  7. Experience in online campaigning, including digital and database system management.
  8. A sound understanding of the Northern Territory social and political environment. Life or work experience in regional and/or remote Australia would be beneficial.
  9. Willingness to travel periodically to regional and remote Australia. Experience in regional and remote travel would be beneficial.
