We have a valuable opportunity for a casual Field Assistant to be involved with the monitoring of the health, behaviour and well-being of koalas throughout several locations across Queensland. This role will require proven experience and confidence in koala survey, capture and handling techniques, with knowledge in radio-telemetry and field data collection/recording also highly desirable. Hours will vary week to week with the potential for future full-time employment. Please note that project locations vary, and working away for periods of up to 2 weeks at a time (including evening and weekend work) will be a strict requirement of the position.

Duties include: 

  • Assisting with the capture, trapping, monitoring, rescue, and release of wildlife
  • Koala surveys
  • Field data/sample collection and recording
  • Field monitoring of koalas
  • Identification of potentially sick/injured koalas
  • Liaison with clients and other external parties in respect of operational aspects of the job
  • Coordination of fieldwork and logistics

Must have:

  • A strong interest and passion for wildlife conservation and animal welfare 
  • Wildlife capture and handling skills, preferably specific to koalas
  • Previous field experience (ie used to working in harsh conditions)
  • Ability to withstand long days in the field in an often challenging environment 
  • Current Driver Licence
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and public holidays, and to spend weeks away from home at a time
  • Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team
  • General ability to quickly learn and utilise technical equipment such as radio-telemetry equipment, databases etc

Desirable:

  • Climbing and working at heights certification (highly desirable) 
  • Tertiary qualifications in relevant biological disciplines (eg conservation, environmental, ecology or related areas)
  • Radio-telemetry experience
  • First Aid Certificate - must be willing to obtain prior to commencing work
  • Construction White Card - must be willing to obtain prior to commencing work
  • Experience working in and around heavy machinery
  • 4WD experience
