Gangalidda and Garawa Native Title Aboriginal Corporation (GGNTAC) represents the Gangalidda and Garawa People who hold native title rights interests in land and sea country in the Southern Gulf of Carpentaria, stretching east from the Northern Territory border to the Leichhardt River near Burketown.

GGNTAC provides native title and related services to its members and to the Gangalidda & Garawa native title holders. GGNTAC was established in 2010 to act as agent Prescribed Body Corporate (PBC). Since that time, the Corporation has established a number of wholly owned subsidiaries and businesses.

Through its service body, Gangalidda and Garawa Services Pty Ltd and other subsidiaries, GGNTAC delivers a range of products and services to its members and to the Gangalidda & Garawa native title holders, including:

  • Native Title Consultation & Future Acts;
  • Cultural Heritage Protection;
  • Cultural Heritage Induction Workshops;
  • Jigija Indigenous Fire Training Program; and
  • Tourism & Camping.

We have an exciting and unique opportunity to make a real difference with Gangalidda & Garawa people and businesses.

This is a new opening for the right person seeking to bring their extensive and diverse experience across all aspects of commercial operating environments in varied sectors to a challenging, hands-on leadership role that will support GGNTAC in its economic growth and development. Initially based in the Cairns office, the role may be relocated to be based in Burketown for operational requirements in the near future, subject to funding for accommodation.

The Opportunity:

In collaboration with the GGNTAC Board of Directors you will be responsible for:

  • Implementation, profitability and stability of current opportunities;
  • Initiating the development of identified and existing planned commercial activities;
  • Identification and implementation of future opportunities;
  • Ensuring ongoing sustainable strategic and economic development; and
  • Increasing employment opportunities for local Indigenous people in the Southern Gulf.

This position will be accountable to the GGNTAC Chairperson ensuring that GGNTAC builds its capability to work toward sustainable self-government and capitalisation on commercial opportunities across a range of industries including Resources, Tourism, Land Management and Service Delivery.

We are looking for the right person to join and lead Gangalidda and Garawa Services Pty Ltd and other subsidiaries as the General Manager. This position is responsible for:

  • Actively participate in the development and implementation of the GGNTAC’s 10-year Strategic and 5-year Economic Development and Operational Plans;
  • Ensure strategies are in place to build future Indigenous leaders for ongoing success and operations of both established business and new business opportunities;
  • Develop Annual Business Plans, monitor progress of annual objectives and control expenditure in accordance with the Board approved budget and annual business plan;
  • Provide strong financial and operational oversight and management of all areas of business of GGNTAC and associated commercial entities and ensure compliance with legislative and relevant accounting standards;
  • Prepare reports and business papers for presentation at Board meetings;
  • Provide guidance and advice to the GGNTAC Board to achieve sustainable business outcomes supportive of GGNTAC’s vision and goals;
  • Build on current capabilities of GGNTAC and its associated commercial entities to maximise development opportunities on land and waters in which Native Title has been recognised;
  • Comply and monitor the relevant Legislation and Company Policies, Procedures and standards on Health and Safety at work; and
  • Create a culture of continual development of the Board and staff and support and build the capacity of the organisation to respond to opportunities as they arise and foster best practice business management.

For this position, the Key Performance of the role will be measured against the following indicators:

  • Collaborating, connecting and involving stakeholders at all levels; and
  • Program and project risk management.

Selection Criteria

Applicants are required to demonstrate their skills, qualifications and experience against the following criteria.

Essential:

  1. Prior experience in similar managerial roles across diverse industries, business structures and operating areas e.g., hotel chains, airlines franchises, revenue management and supply chain management roles;
  2. Proven ability with business development aligned to financially sustainable economic growth and secure employment opportunities;
  3. Demonstrated Risk Management and Compliance experience;
  4. Proven ability to undertake clear and concise communication with all stakeholders, including Traditional Owners, Government agencies and the members of the private business sector;
  5. Proven ability to think strategically and creatively to problem solve and to make informed decisions;
  6. Previous experience creating and managing budgets ensuring financial outcomes are achieved;
  7. Previous experience leading diverse teams;
  8. Ability to manage multiple projects with inclusive stakeholder engagement at all levels with focus on community in planning and timelines; and
  9. Current manual Driver’s Licence.

Desirable:

  1. Tertiary level qualification in Business, Economics, Commerce or other relevant discipline;
  2. Previous exposure to working within a multi-cultural environment;
  3. Knowledge of Aboriginal cultures and an understanding of the issues faced by remote Indigenous communities and the blockers preventing their participation in the business economy; and
  4. Experience working with Indigenous communities and leadership development.

What we offer:

The position is a full-time position and involves regular travel throughout the southern Gulf of Carpentaria region:

  • Salary Range: To be negotiated pending qualifications and experience;
  • Salary sacrifice arrangements are available; and
  • Leave entitlements will include 5 weeks annual leave.
