An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced environmental land and water management professional to join the dynamic team in Abbotsford.

The Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation is a Registered Aboriginal Party appointed under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006. The Corporation holds statutory responsibilities for the protection and management of Aboriginal cultural heritage objects and places in Victoria. Additional functions of the corporation include, environmental land management, cross-cultural education, traditional welcome to country and smoking ceremonies, and cultural consultations.

Position Purpose:

Reporting to the CEO, the successful applicant will work with Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) staff and Wurundjeri Corporations officers and members to ensure effective and efficient engagement between DELWP and Wurundjeri, including by:

  • being the central point of contact for DELWP’s staff seeking to engage with Wurundjeri Corporation; and
  • manage the planning and co-ordination of any engagement between DELWP and Wurundjeri Corporation to ensure it meets the objectives of both Parties.
  • negotiating and managing on-going and sustainable funding agreements between DELWP and Wurundjeri Corporation

The duties of this role include:

  • Ensure Wurundjeri Corporations members are appropriately consulted and involved in matters which are the subject of engagement between the Wurundjeri and DELWP.
  • Work with DELWP to develop a more sustainable funding model to maintain the necessary capacity to fully and substantially engage with DELWP on matters within DELWP’s portfolio responsibilities.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Wurundjeri’s Whole of Country Plan.
  • Ensure Wurundjeri meets any reporting obligations under this Agreement and any other agreement or arrangement with DELWP.
  • Ensure all funding agreements for DELWP are properly budgeted, expended and acquitted within grant agreement timelines;
  • Assist the relevant departments of the organisation to create a self-sustainable business model which generates a yearly surplus of funds to go towards achieving Wurundjeri’s strategic objectives
  • Where expertise is required, assist with ad hoc projects from other departments
  • Assist WWCHAC in navigating and working with current DELWP policies or strategies, and preparing responses to new or updated DELWP policies or strategies.

Education and experience, desirable

  • Tertiary qualifications in Environment, Conservation, Land Management, Water or Planning.

Essential Competencies

  • A genuine interest in Traditional Owners and Aboriginal culture and history
  • Experience in project management and a track record of delivering projects within budget and on time;
  • Ability to multitask and manage the associated pressures resulting from working on a diverse range of projects under difficult conditions;
  • Proven capacity and analytical skills to enable clear understanding and interpretation of relevant legislation
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders
  • Experience in effectively managing political sensitivities resulting from stakeholders having different agendas and requirements
  • Ability to maintain an independent and often neutral position on contentious and sensitive issues
  • Strong administrative and organisational skills;
  • Ability to be flexible and work cooperatively in a team environment.

Conditions of Employment

  • 18-month, full-time, fixed term, attractive salary package on offer.
