The Ecological Society of Australia (ESA) is the peak group of ecologists in Australia, representing members from across Australia who work in universities and other research organisations, government agencies, NGOs, private industry, practitioners, and consultancies. We are a national not-for-profit formed in 1959. We are a registered environmental charity.

In conjunction with the Media Working Group, the Science Communication Coordinator will help plan, develop and distribute content to promote the ESA, ecology, and the work of ecologists in Australia; and advise on strategic direction for ESA’s public communication and engagement activities. This role reports to the Board through the Media Working Group and Executive Officer.

We apply this knowledge for the benefit of people and nature.’ One of our core values is knowledge sharing, and our new Strategic Plan places a strong emphasis on effective communication with members and others outside of the Society to improve understanding of ecology more broadly, and integrate ecological principles into environmental policy and society.

The incumbent will design and implement an integrated communication strategy to support achievement of ESA’s aims as articulated in our Strategic Plan 2020-2024. An effective communication strategy will enable: meaningful communication with members, the capacity to reach and attract potential members, and a stronger profile and appreciation of ecology amongst the wider community.


  • Coordinate high quality member communications including content and distribution of the weekly e-News, and other email communications as required.
  • Grow the media profile and social media profile of the ESA, and ecology in Australia.
  • Develop and manage the ESA’s WordPress website, including liaising with web developers to maintain the website and develop new features.
  • Contribute to ESA media and communication activities including managing media activities around the annual conference, participating as an active member of the Media Working Group, preparing media releases, and undertaking other media liaison as required.
  • Work collaboratively on strategic communications across the Society to support the Board, working groups and members with communication activities.
  • Assist the Membership Manager and Executive Officer to manage online awards submission processes and the membership database as required.
  • Manage the ESA GSuite account, including Google Drive and Gmail accounts for Board members.
  • Monitor and evaluate communication activities, and provide regular reports to the Board.
  • Maintain engaging, accurate, and professional communications in accordance with ESA’s objectives and policies.

Essential Selection criteria

  • Experience delivering a coordinated communication strategy through multiple channels (e.g. website; eNewsletters; and social media)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to write engaging and effective messages
  • Experience in proactive and reactive media liaison and developing media networks
  • Proven ability to liaise and collaborate effectively, professionally, and respectfully with diverse stakeholder groups (e.g. Industry, government, Indigenous groups, media, and practitioners)
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, using sound judgement and problem-solving skills to juggle competing priorities
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Demonstrated experience using the MS Office suite, GSuite, CMS, direct email marketing tools, CRM software packages, social media platforms including scheduling software, and photo editing tools
  • A passion for the work and mission of the ESA, and commitment to the principles of diversity, inclusiveness, and equal opportunity


  • Experience with the not for profit sector
  • Experience in the Environmental Science and/or Science communication sector
  • Multimedia or equivalent qualifications

This role:

  • Is a paid part-time position, approximately 20 hours/week;
  • $30 - $35 per hour based on experience


  • This role works closely with the ESA Board, Media Working Group, Executive Officer and other staff to manage the Society’s communication and public outreach;
  • Some travel may be required to attend meetings e.g. the annual ESA Board Planning Day, linked to the Annual Conference. Travel and accommodation costs in these circumstances will be covered by ESA.
