Kakadu National Park is offering an ongoing position for Senior Ranger within one of Australia’s most recognised national parks and iconic World Heritage listed areas. The role will provide opportunities to undertake a diverse, unique and interesting range of duties, working within a cross-cultural environment in the Ranger team.

About the role:

As the Senior Ranger you will provide leadership to a team of Rangers in aspects of protected area management specifically relating to visitor management.

You will assist in preparing work programs, managing budgets and setting the direction for district team (in the context of the Kakadu Plan of Management) and be part of the Park Operations Team. You will be working closely with traditional owners and other stakeholders in this World Heritage listed, jointly-managed National Park and contribute to the management of the natural and cultural values of the park.

You will be responsible for planning and implementing visitor management projects and programs and demonstrated skills in this area are highly desirable. Communication skills are important, as well as other practical skills, such as the ability to drive a 4WD and a current first aid certificate. You will form part of an operational roster that includes weekends and public holidays, as well as, at times, participating in emergency responses, compliance and enforcement activities. As an important member of our operations team, and a uniformed representative of Kakadu National Park, park visitors and tour operators will look to you for expert assistance and guidance.

Eligibility:

  • To be eligible for any position in the Department you must be an Australian Citizen.
  • You must undergo and satisfy a National Police History Check (prior to engagement).
  • This position also involves working with Children and the successful applicant must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate Working with Children Check.
  • This position is an ‘Identified’ position which signifies that the role has a strong involvement in issues relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The successful applicant must have an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People.

Other work related requirements – the successful applicant will:

  • Participate in the Park’s Duty Officer Roster involving after hours monitoring of emergency alarms and phones;
  • Attain the pre-requisite qualifications and be appointed as an Authorised Officer (Warden) under the EPBC Act;
  • Hold a current manual driver’s licence and ability to drive a 4WD vehicle;
  • Hold a current coxswains or have the ability to obtain;
  • Ability to obtain and hold a NT Employee Firearms Licence;
  • Undertake duties in light aircraft in remote areas including helicopters;
  • Hold a current Apply First Aid Certificate or have the ability to obtain this qualification;
  • Undertake rostered duties involving early, late and weekend shifts; and
  • Meet physical fitness minimum standards to undertake work within the role including firefighting as needed.
  • The occupant of the position is required to work to an agreed performance development plan, participate in training activities, wear a uniform and work consistent with operational requirements and conditions within the Enterprise Agreement
