About the Role

Ongoing roles are available in the Sydney Industry section of EPA’s Metropolitan Branch. Environment officers take lead roles in the delivery of the work of the section.

Sydney Industry Section regulates over 220 licensed industry facilities across 29 local government areas in Metropolitan Sydney, covering sectors such as chemical manufacturing, metal coating and marinas. The Section also regulates a wide range of other activities including concrete batching plants and council activities. In addition to a strong focus on effective regulation, the Section responds to pollution incidents with daytime and after-hours responsibilities and carries out campaigns and operations on other EPA-regulated matters, including pesticides and dangerous goods.

The section also contributes to broader EPA projects and reforms and provides advice to the Department of Planning and Environment and councils on significant planning matters.

Primary purpose of the role

Undertake diverse day-to-day tasks relating to the application of EPA legislative responsibilities in assigned regulatory area/s involving major issues affecting the EPA, and activities relating to other regulatory functional areas, as required by EPA operational priorities.

Essential requirements

  • Sound understanding of the relevant policies, practices and legislative requirements that govern the EPA’s operations.
  • Knowledge and experience in of one or more environment protection areas, including: air, water, noise, waste, chemicals, hazardous materials, radiation & environmental planning.
  • Knowledge and experience in applying current relevant environmental legislation, with demonstrated ability to interpret other environmental legislation.
  • Current drivers licence

A Recruitment Pool may be established for future ongoing and temporary roles with similar focus capabilities. The Recruitment Pool may be available to hiring managers from the EPA, OEH and other NSW Public Sector agencies over a 12-month period, including for positions in the Major Infrastructure section of the EPA’s Metropolitan Branch.
