We are currently looking for an exceptional, highly motivated and engaging person to join our team as an Ecologist based in Roma, southwest Queensland. A great opportunity to be involved in an established company and be mentored by some of the best in the industry.

Involving remote field and some office-based work you will primarily conduct ecological field surveys and assessments consistent with current legislation, permits and best practice to inform management plans and development assessments. You will also undertake some fauna spotting catching and support our ecotourism branch by guiding and delivering outstanding visitor experiences to our guests.

The ecological work can be diverse and will include field preparations, desktop assessments and reviews, field-based fauna and flora surveys, weed surveys, threatened species searches, habitat evaluations, data entry, report writing and occasional fauna spotting catching. 

Working in a small team, there is the opportunity to develop skills quickly for someone ambitious and proactive about their development.

Position Requirements:

  • Minimum of five years ecological survey experience
  • Excellent plant identification and well-developed flora survey skills including pest and threatened species (knowledge of plants and vegetation communities within the Brigalow Belt region an advantage)
  • Thorough understanding of the Queensland regional ecosystem framework and BioCondition survey methodology
  • High level of knowledge of wildlife ecology, including fauna habitat requirements
  • Demonstrated experience and well-developed skills in fauna survey using multiple techniques, species identification and handling of fauna (including hazardous species)
  • Working knowledge of key legislation including Nature Conservation Act 1992, Vegetation Management Act 1999, Environmental Protection Act 1994 and Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999
  • Excellent communication skills including oral and written (reports, educational publications, conference and scientific papers)
  • High-level problem-solving research / analytical skills, including the ability to obtain and interpret information and make specific recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability in accurate data entry and record keeping skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to Workplace Heath, Safety and Environmental Standards
  • Demonstrated high level of organisational skills, including ability to work to deadlines, complete tasks unsupervised, coordinate teams and undertake work in remote/isolated areas
  • Proficient in use of GPS, Digital Camera and communication equipment (radios, satellite phones)
  • Proficient in Microsoft office, especially Word, Powerpoint, Excel and databases
  • Manual license and experience in operating a 4WD vehicle / driving off-road
  • A degree in ecology (or equivalent) is essential
  • Vegetation Mapping/GIS experience an advantage
  • Experience in tour-guiding an advantage
  • Current first aid certificate (essential)
