There are a number of opportunities in the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Energy to contribute to the protection of Australia’s environment and heritage, including environmental health, through developing and implementing regulation, national standards and guidance.

We are looking for strategic thinkers who are motivated, adaptable and are good at working collaboratively.

The roles will involve conducting analysis and research to provide advice and develop policy on environment protection, site contamination, chemical and/or waste regulation and standards. You will also be supporting the Executive and Minister by providing high level advice and briefing on the policy issues related to environmental protection and environmental health and liaising with internal and external stakeholders to identify and collaboratively develop / co-design approaches on key regulatory and policy issues.

These roles will support key activities of the Environment Standards Division within the Department over the coming year including:

  • Planning and preparation for the next statutory review of the EPBC Act, which must commence no later than October 2019
  • Collaborating with states and territories and other Commonwealth agencies on the development of national approaches and guidance on managing chemical contamination from per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances in the PFAS national environmental management plan - incorporating technical, policy and project management elements
  • Working with government and industry stakeholders to progress the treaty making process for the perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) listing under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, including finalising a regulation impact statement for a Government decision on ratification, and any implementation that follows


The successful applicant must be an Australian citizen (or have permanent residency status pending the granting of Australian citizenship) and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance (Baseline).
