Sentinel is a small Canberra-based consultancy providing remote monitoring solutions in Africa, Asia, the Pacific and Australia, who now has a vacancy for a Hydrographer to undertake hydrographic monitoring projects both within Australia and internationally.

Due to continued and sustained demand, Sentinel is seeking a self-motivated individual that enjoys a busy and positive work environment.

The role will suit a person with strong mathematical aptitude and excellent communication skills who has an interest in water resource management, specifically monitoring and base line data capture. The successful applicant will enjoy working in a range of differing environmental conditions and display superior levels of maturity in their interactions and decision making. Practical ability, including experience with hand tools or machinery, will be highly advantageous in this role.

Job Description:

The successful applicant will be involved in the operations of hydrographic monitoring projects conducted in Australia and internationally, as a member of a team and independently across multiple projects at any one time.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Design, install and manage remote monitoring stations and networks.
  • Communicate the status of jobs/projects, report any safety issues/incidents, receive instructions and provide progress reports on any tasks assigned by management.
  • Order, check, pack and ship equipment and supplies for field projects.
  • Collect, record and transport environmental samples.
  • Sort information collected from a range of samples and monitoring stations and conduct computer processing of the data.
  • Maintain record keeping procedures and practices to ensure all job records and data are secure, backed up and organised in an accessible and logical fashion.
  • Undertake data analysis using both proprietary and supplier based computer software packages.
  • Maintain a wide range of equipment.
  • Regularly undertake job safety analysis checks.

Sentinel places a high degree of importance on safety, and all field officers are individually responsible for their personal safety and the safety of those working with them. In this role, you will, as a minimum, comply with all relevant safety procedures. You will need to notify management of, and/or rectify, any unsafe practices identified.

Position Requirements:

Essential:

  • Ability to work proactively with a level of enthusiasm and flexibility displaying superior levels of maturity.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Capacity to work in remote, isolated and challenging environments both in Australia and overseas.
  • High level of computer literacy in a broad range of computerised systems and data sources.
  • Current manual car driver’s license.
  • Proficient swimmer.
  • Currently hold, or be eligible for, an Australian passport.

Desirable:

  • Tertiary qualifications, preferably in engineering with an interest in water resource management.
  • Hydrographic or hydrological experience.
  • Competency in surveying.

Remuneration

The successful applicant will be employed under the relevant modern Award, at a level commensurate with experience and/or qualifications, and the salary will attract 12% super. An employment contract and confidentiality agreement will need to be signed on commencement. The successful applicant will be required to pass a medical.
