Australian Ecosystems (AE) provides services in the field of ecological restoration and development including retrofit of sustainable human communities. The maintenance crew work as part of a close knit team and specialist sub-contractors to complete maintenance of urban and peri urban waterways, remnant bush land and major environmental planting projects.

The Maintenance Crew Member will report directly to the Crew Managers. The successful candidate will have a minimum of 1 year experience in a similar working environment with proven skills and high-quality work in the maintenance of:

  • Urban stormwater treatment systems
  • Urban and peri urban bushland reserves
  • Parks and public open space reserves 

We are looking for people who are proactive, fit, energetic, hardworking, reliable and punctual. Our Maintenance Crews operate in all areas of Greater Geelong and west of Greater Melbourne.

This position will be mainly based in the western and northern suburbs of Greater Melbourne and may have the opportunity to assist in the other business units on occasion. As our operations are managed from our depot in Port Melbourne there may be a requirement to attend meetings at this location.

The primary position includes the following duties: 

  • Work as part of a team to deliver all elements of natural and constructed ecosystem maintenance to a high standard
  • Take part in daily job start meetings/ tool box meetings / OHS requirements, and maintain a safe working environment
  • Apply your knowledge and experience to deliver: 

    • Effective use of a range of weed management techniques including chemical application with Back Pack spray or QuikSpray unit, mechanical removal (brush cutter, slasher, chainsaw, etc), and manual removal
    • Effective control of weeds in sensitive remnant sites including grassland environments
    • Safe work practices in accordance with company management system and OH&S regulations
    • Appropriate care and maintenance of equipment
    • Correct chemical use in accordance with Western Manager instruction, company policy and MSDS/Label
    • Environmental maintenance outcomes in a variety of locations and Bio-regions
    • Close cooperation with all other divisions of AE including construction, nursery, consulting and admin

Important qualities for successful execution of the position include

Must have: 

  • Chemical user Certificate
  • Construction Industry Induction ‘White’ Card
  • Current manual driving licence
  • On-site skills that include all of the following – weed identification skills, planting, equipment, maintenance, weed control and landscape skills and an ability to work in sensitive remnant vegetation
  • Positive outlook, cooperative demeanor, excellent interpersonal, communication and teamwork
  • Competence with mechanical equipment such as ‘brushcutters”, planting drills etc 

Highly desirable

  • Qualification in Natural Resource Management (Cert 4 Conservation and Land Management) or similar
  • Experience in maintenance of urban stormwater treatment systems, urban bushland reserves, parks and public open space reserves
  • Honesty, flexibity and a strong work ethic
